My new to me Bianchi San Jose came with Kool stop brake pads installed, but they are the ceramic formulation (olive green). Is this formulation okay with standard rims like Sun CR-18 or should I replace them with either salmon or triple compound?

if like the green Magura, that's abrasive, ceramic brake track rims hold up , common ones dont.

I used the green Magura on my HS33 brakes and Mavic hard anodized (CD) rims ,

2 wet down hill stops scoured through the hard surface anodizing, improving the braking,

then I put the regular black compound on.

now I use the salmon.. I think Kool Stop Molds the salmon compound pads for the German Company,
maybe they supply them with the 4 they offer..

Send an email to Kool Stop and ask. They would know for sure. I suspect they could be hard on normal aluminum rims like CR-18s. Could be wrong on that though. Roger

Replace them--brake pads are a terrible place to save money. Run the best you can. Salmon are great.

Sirrus Rider, The green pads are meant for rims with a ceramic brake track. They will work with standard brake tracks, but expect accelerated brake track wear.

I also recommend replacing the green pads with Kool Stop Salmon pads. Stopping power will be better and your rims will thank you.

+1 or 2 for the Salmon Pads. I have a bike with the Mavic Ceramic rims and one with Aluminum brake tracks. Have used the Koolstop Green Ceramic pads on both rims and found them to have less stopping power than the Salmons on both rims and as mentioned the Greens will wear out your aluminum surfaces faster.

Thanks guys I wrote Kool Stop and they said the same thing. Ceramic formulation can be used, but is not recommended. They recommend the dual compound. I went ahead and bought a set of Koolstop Cross pads will run those and then switch to salmons. (Shoe media is replaceable)
