Hello Farfromparadise, welcome to the forums. Nice pics! Where is this bike that might help since while it appears to be made in Italy that does not mean it was exported.
It is still a bit early and Saturday so give it a while and I am sure someon will recognise that stylized G

Hi Bianchigirl,
thnks for the reply. The bike is located in Australia. I was under the impression it was a Gitane and have read that it was not uncommon for them to be made in Italy.
Was trying not to lead anyone in any direction in the first post but it might be easier to get opinions this way...
thanks in advanced if anyone has any info.

No idea on the frame at this point, but those Maillard 700 small-flange hubs (with the original pre-Helicomatic logo) were France's answer to Campagnolo in the late-70's, and the logo changed in the early-'80s. Also, since the 700 hubs were a bit higher-end than the Normandy hubs (that often came on Peugot PX10s for instance), I'm guessing that the bike was near the higher-end of the line. Even though any of the components might have been swapped out over the years, I would guess that few people would actually put older wheels on their newer bike.
