Who's the idiot?
Was helping a friend today chase a creak in his Trek Checkpoint with GRX crankset. Went to tighten the chainring bolts... and they tighten from the inside! The only way you can get to them is to remove the crankset from the bike. Are there people at Shimano whose job it is to figure out how to make things as aggravating as possible?

I've always been able to turn the crank to get access to the bolts/nuts from the frame side of the rings. There are usually at 1 or 2 exposed that you can get to beneath the downtube and BB.
Perhaps the fault is really with the bike's frame manufacturer that made a frame where you can't get to the backside of the rings.

I have had to shorten the shorter arm on a 5mm hex wrench in the past to fit into tight spots. Is there no room at all to get one in there? Must have bolts very close to the bottom bracket.

Yep, I have run into this several times. No big deal, just remove the crank and do the work. I say get used to this as there is more to come, I promise!

This has been my experience, too.

I have no remembered experience with GRX cranks WRT ring bolts but I just today cut down and ground square a 5mm hex wrench today at work for close clearance bolts. Andy
