'74 International
All,
A current image of my faithful '74 Raleigh International.
I built it up new out of the box 39 years ago and it has served me as a Training Bike, 'Cross Bike, Touring Bike and now Town Bike.
We get along.
Regards,
Bandera

Very nice International, well built and great that you have kept her running, too. I miss my Inter. even more every time I am here and see the ones looking so sweet.

Ive only been into vintage bikes for a short time but the Raleigh International is my "grail" bike. I love the orange paint, the nice lugs, the geometry, the tubing, the campy components. I think its my favorite Raleigh of all time, I hope I come across one at some point at the right price.

Great looking bike Bandera.
Every time someone posts an International, I revert to mourning for my Champagne '74, stolen in '85.

One of my Favorites and what I had been calling Chestnut brown is actually Coppertone.

Nice International, and my favorite color. I had a '73 in the chartreuse green, and liked it a lot, but traded for an RRA frame, same year, in '74 and have had it ever since. It still has most of the International's parts on it though

Thanks Guys,
It was fun putting the Hybrid Sturmey Archer AW/ Cyclo 3 cog set-up in service w/ barcons & the original '74 Campi NR derailleur.
The 40 hole rear hub is a 1955 alloy shell and the 1/2X1/8 Cyclo cogs were rescued unused from a dusty box decades ago.
Works a treat, as they say.

Bandera

Love it, Bandera. Loyalty, indeed.
I bought a '74 International frame the other year, and just built it up as a weirdly Frenchified townie (Ideale/Stronglight/Mafac trifecta) as a hold over. My summer project is to have the International somehow replace both my touring bike (Cannondale) and road bike (Lemond).
What was your experience using the Int'l as a touring bike? Any problems with heel clearance or securely mounting a rack (p-clamps, I guess?).

suncake,
Nice build!
Shows how versatile the International still is, and it's British siblings designed for club riders.
I didn't have any problems touring on the International, but I am a minimalist and didn't carry the kitchen sink.
I also was traveling around the US Mid-west where I would ride & camp for a few days, visit friends and repeat.
The NR crankset was replaced w/ a Shimano triple 52/40/28, it now sports a single 44T 1/2x1/8. Shimano Crane long cage rear der, barcons and a 14-28 freewheel matched my fitness & terrain.
The Blackburn rack in the pic has been mounted on and off ever since. I'd P-clamp a double stay rack today but I never had a problem. Heel clearance was adequate for size 42 feet ,YMMV. I was using Eclipse panniers, which had nice clearance, & handlebar bag.
When I got home the tubulars & club ride gearing went back on, good to go.

Bandera

I just bought a '74 Raleigh International, in what looks like original paint, however a few things appear to be missing from the original setup.
Currently there is a non Campagnolo seat post that was shipped with the bike and I would like to replace it with the correct group. All the literature does not indicate the groupset of the seat post. I'm going to guess it is supposed to be Nuovo Record. Does anyone have a definitive answer? How about the length? I'm assuming 27.2mm diameter.

Back in those days Campagnolo only had Valentino, Gran Sport and Record or Nuovo Record. Super Record was a lightly refined and lightened version but they shared many parts still. However I believe you would be correct to assume the original was Nuovo Record. it most likely is 27.2 but check the current post to be sure. Most road post come in a 'standard' length of 180mm.

The pedals, hubs, and derailleur are the only items that have a specified groupset.

Inevitably further modifications for town bike use have ensued, a more current pic.
The Blumel fenders were no longer safe to ride & the '70's B-72 finally gave up the ghost and split at the front rivets.
As Oingo Boingo once sang:

OEM, which for me lasted as long as it took to remove the bike from the shipping carton and modify it for my requirements, was Campagnolo Nuovo Record/Record except for the Weinmann calipers/levers. I'm still using the OEM rear derail 40 years on. Being a "full" 531 Carlton built frame it is indeed 27.2.

I'm assuming that some of the other items on my bike were swapped out. The suspects are:
pedals are Atom,
the rims are AVA tubular,
the hubs are Normandy high flange,
possibly original:
the brake hoods are Weinmann
Everything else appears to match (except for the aforementioned seat post and saddle).
I even think the bar tape and ends are possibly original.

I'm not a "period correct" guy since I modify my machines as requirements change but a I'd snag another Internat'l in OEM rig to enjoy myself.
