So as someone else said, I am am also digital picture illiterate and I will work on that so please be patient. I have the extreme good fortune of procuring not one but two prime Merz examples this past spring after 40 years. I met him early on when he started out in the basement of Cyclecraft and I was in high school, I have been hooked ever since. Both are 62cm and one was his from 74 and has logged many miles with him on it. The other one is almost all original Campy nuovo record save for Suntour barcons which I have always liked. It has Cinelli bars and stem, Super Champion rims, Columbus tubing with Campy dropouts, Original Avocet seat was missing so it has a Brooks now. This one was built in 79, is Taupe in color which looks green. Both are touring bikes with paint to match Silca pumps, original custom racks front and rear. The one that was his is mostly not original as he removed the cantilever brakes at some point, repainted it light purple and sold it. It was sold a couple of times and brought back to him when he made a Dura Ace EX crank into a triple which is still there, it has Ultegra 3x9, Nitto tall stem, Salsa short and shallow bars, original Campy headset, seatpost and front wheel as well as, you guessed it Brooks This one is 531, which has always been my thing just because. Both of these can be seen on his facebook page if you want to dig a little. The one that was his is light green and is fully loaded on a mountain pass tour in its original form, the other one is there in the pictures from Sellwood cycle where I bought both of them. As I said I will work on pics and I realize this is lame without them, but I couldnt let this go on any longer without representing.

Boat Anchor to Colin Laing, Reynolds 753R

1 Attachment(s)
Rescued from a fellow who had this amazingly dentless, ugly touched up painted frame and had jammed a 8 speed rear wheel into a mostly DA 7400 groupset, that was so out of true it dragged on the brake with the release out. Got it home and sorted out and it was unridable. Swapped out the fork which was clearly tweaked and it still pulled hard left. Tried cold setting the fork but it would pop back as soon as I mounted the frame. Brought the soon to be boat anchor to local frame builder Andy Gilmour in Tucson who said cold setting 753 was no worries. With his Marchetti and Lange tables he got it tracking great and spread to 130mm, but for how long, after all the internet will tell you 753 cold setting can not be done.
5,000 miles later as I was sure the sweet ride was here to stay I let Andy refinish the frame and add original Laing decals he has on hand. I have maybe another 1,000 on it now, mostly all DA, Nitto bars and stem, need to find DA hubs.
I try to not loose too much money on my rescues and when I bring home another it helps to point out to Wifezilla that some of you are so good that you make money on them. It is really not that important in that I do so much enjoy returning them to the road.

Tx Gomango, of course I've been a lurker and held myself in check up till now. My patience with this stuff is as limited as my skill on the web, I can surf and waste $$$ with the best of them but thats about it. This to me is all about believing how cool all this is and knowing as much history and folklore we can glean from each other and whatever else we can dig up.

Here's one of my American steel bikes, built last year by Jeff Lyon. 650B, with a typical modern randonneur build:

Old pics. Bike is due for a mild refresh. Brian Spitz built this for me in 1988. Columbus SL with a SP downtube. Paint is original (D+D). Bike easily has 50,000+ miles on it.

Just under 21 lbs as pictured. Good thing too with 42/21 low gear...

Wow, such a great diversity of rides on this page.

Any one of these would deserve a thread of its own.

For example, I dig the color on the Spitz.

Wouldn't it be cool to know more about this builder and their history? :)

Neat, I did't now TK signed the chainstays on the Ross bikes he built. I have an 83 Kellogg Spectrum in a similar color to your bike, and all of the lug work looks very similar. Not surprising, of course.

Hi. Some extraordinarily nice metal here.

Peter built this for me in about 1984 and I quite racing and put it in storage, right after a new paint job, about five years later. In Sep 2014, I was ready to start thrashing around the roads again after a 25 year hiatus. I sent it back to Belmont to be cold-set to 130mm and kitted out with NOS 7800 and those ugly wheels, which I actually thought were expensive.

Sorry about the crummy iPhone pics. The Ksyriums are the same size, I swear. You're not missing anything on the lugs: They're standard short points, with only the usual "club" cutout in the head tube-down tube one. The tubing is SL with an SP down tube and rear triangle. I was in my 20s and we thought I was going to get stronger and heavier, but, for better or worse, neither of those things happened.

My wife has a baby pink one of the same vintage with fairly radical girl-geometry, which we just converted a flat bar cruiser, suitable for a lady of a certain age and dignity. I can try and take some pics.

Cheers.

Lovely bike. As they say, should you ever want to sell it, it looks to be my size. <wink>

Anybody got a Brian Baylis or Wizard to share? I paged back through a few pages and found bane's Wizard. Would be nice to have more examples of Brian Baylis's work in this thread. Heck, even if it's not an American builder, if Mr. Baylis repainted it, I suspect it belongs here...
