That's a nice pic. The earth's curvature is apparent. Seems a bit too dark though, for the time of day, judging by the shadows. Can you lighten it up and repost?

It’s been quite a while, but I finally put some bar tape on this puppy and took some pics. (Flips just kept coming in and using up all my black bar tape!!!).

It’s an ‘85 Trek 420. It was classed as a Sport-Touring model back in ’85 and came with a triple crank and a Jim Blackburn rack.

It feels like a long wheelbase bike, with lots of caster; very stable and easy riding. The ride is silky smooth (especially with the Helicomatic), but seemingly not as cushioned as say, a ’73 Super Course... (I’m not sure if that’s creditable to the skinnier 1-1/8” tires, or to the frame material: “True Temper double butted Chromoly.”)

I hate to be "that guy," but is your fork slightly bent? My highly scientific "hold-the-edge-of-a-piece-of-paper-up-to-computer-screen" technique makes it looks like it might be slightly tweaked.

Again, apologies whether it is bent or not. You pretty much cannot post a picture of a steel bike on the internet without some know-it-all thinking your fork is bent.

Thanks. In 1980, this was a rather expensive bike at $400, especially for a college student. It was somewhat out of character for me to spend that much but I am certainly glad I did. It's like a friend to me now.

Who says you need big wheels to tour ?

My new to me Fuji Touring Series III. eBay buy. It's going back to drop bars obviously. I just did the disassembly last night and started cleaning parts. Next big task, match the paint. Anyway, this is a rough cell phone pic but I'll get a pic up of the finished product when it's, well, finished.

^^^ I'll give 'er a thumbs up when I find a decent paint match. It's certainly not bad but I'm just kind of anal that way. This is the first "normal" colored bike (well, second I suppose) I've done so it will be nice to actually match a common color rather than "titanium blue". :)

I really miss my Touring Series III. It was too big for me, but I haven't had a lot of bikes that would cruise as quickly with nearly no perceptible effort. Find your gear and spin, and you were at your destination before you knew it. You will enjoy the ride:D.,,,,BD

These Series III's certainly are nice bikes, Khatful - glad you scored on one.
There is enough flex in the front fork for the tire to rub the lid off a water bottle mounted in the second cage., located underneath the down tube. - But this I think is something that contributes to the very pleasant ride characteristics. Enjoy.

I bought this essentially unused 1984 Trek 520 on Craigslist a few weeks ago. It fits me perfectly (since added my Brooks).

I'll plan to eventually modify it a bit for loaded touring, but I think it will make a nice 3-season commuter for now while I'm in college.

What do you think I should do with the Helicomatic wheels:

1. Ride them into the ground, then upgrade

2. Sell them (essentially NOS) to collectors(?) and upgrade wheels right away

Also, I'll probably do barcons when I swap the wheels for modern freehubs, with probably an 8 speed cassette in the back.

Wait, a 520 made from 501? Interesting, and beautiful! Ride the helico's into the ground, then upgrade. Once the chain starts jumping
teeth, is a good rule of thumb. If it's essentially unused, then you have a ways to go.;),,,,BD
