Domain SL6 help!!!
 

Hello Im Chris First time posting here. went to the Trek store looking to buy a Trek Domain SL6. Now I took the bike out and loved it it. Got back from the test ride and was just looking it over and smiling.now from doing my research I know it comes with Ultegra group set..I noticed that the crank is actually a Praxis Crank the sales guy said that is how it came. the rest of the group set is Ultegra is this a normal think to change the crank on a new bike from Ultegra to a Praxis? Should I still buy the Bike? its 22/23 model year and is the 3rd generation I believe. Any help would be great looking on getting it sometime today but am not sure about the whole crank thing.wonder if I buy it if I call trek and see if they will swith the crank?

Welcome. It's common for manufacturers to split up complete groups, usually as a cost-saving measure. So your Trek with a complete Ultegra group except the Praxis crank is nothing new. They're trying to save a buck.

If you like the bike, don't let the lack of a complete group stop you. On the other hand, if you're OCD and can't stand the thought of a bike without a complete group, then go for a bike with a complete group. Win either way.

This has been very common for years. I don't know if the bike in question is supposed to come with an Ultegra crank but you can look it up on Trek's website.
Its been done as a cost cutting measure on many bikes.

Just call Trek and ask. Aside from whether they would switch the crank, you want to know that definitely the shop didn't do an aftermarket switchout and therefore potentially void manufacturer warranty. If you purchase the bike, there may be value in getting the full specs of bike you purchased as part of the receipt, if the Praxis crank isn't part of Trek's database as being the stock build.

I'd say that it's worth asking about, but not a deal-breaker. Trek is usually pretty good about complete groupsets, but Praxis makes some good stuff.

On the US Trek site that bike comes w/ an Ultegra crank. Where are you? It is possible that in other parts of the world that bike got a Praxis crank.

This is probably the reason for the switch. The shop itself would be unlikely to switch the crank, it's too much work for very little profit. When bikes arrive at a shop, most components are already installed the bike except for the front wheel, bar and stem and saddle and seat post.

As mentioned it was\is a supply issue. They will ensure the SLR models will be complete group sets first and then work their way down to the lower models.

Since you like the bike otherwise, just decide if you think the Praxis crank in it of a comparable tier level to the Ultegra crank. You might find the spec's on the website for that specific model of Domane and if it's not a Praxis crank then use that maybe to see if you can get a better deal. Though likely not unless you are a good at this type of negotiation.

The specs on the model I saw did show a Ultegra FC-R8000 crank with a Praxis T47 BB compatible with Shimano Hollowtech II crank spindle sizes. Maybe the Trek Dealer can show you the specs for that particular model you looked at which might indeed be different. It's not too uncommon for lower tier models of the same frame bike to have mixed components.

If what is written doesn't match the actual parts, I'd have it corrected. Can't assume it was an authorized change by trek unless there's a paper trail.

Look on the Trek website and see if there is some fine print saying parts are subject to substitution. I e noticed a few mountain bikes with Praxis cranks substituted.

Errrr ... as written right on the U.S. Trek site for this particular bike (and probably all of 'em):

"Due to supply chain issues, compatible parts may be substituted at any time without notice" ... (emPHASis added). Praxis is a very good brand, and certainly compatible.
