The USFS started allowing motorcycles on the forest trails with no restrictions in the 1970's when Nixon's people were in charge. Major change with a great increase in vandalism and of course noise levels in the forests. I was working with someone packing in people, often teenage girls, and we started putting rifles on the horses as a warning to the city yahoos on their dirt bikes.

I grew up in Nevada and started driving in 1973. We did a lot of off roading in rear wheel drive tired old/cheap pick up trucks from the 40's and 50's. We always carried guns because you would meet weird people in the out back who would be armed up and acting strange. We got shot at a couple of times from a distance, once accidentally by target shooters who I'd like to believe didn't see us drive up. In those days we carried rifles on a rear window rack. If I was to start driving off road again I would consider carrying firearms for safety. I've hiked and MTB'd all over the Sierra and never felt threatened by anyone and thankfully never ran into any large predators. I have never carried firearms while hiking.or MTBing.

Hope it's news I've been waiting for, but since I can't open the link, I will search further. Thanx!

EDIT. Not quite, but a step closer, I suppose.

Really. Seems simple to me and I don't know why it should take so long to get approved. BTW, I'm 65, own a TREK Rail and I want to ride the trails I love that are managed by the USFS.

The Forest Service manages nearly 160,000 miles of trails in 42 states and Puerto Rico. Just saying that's a lot & I'm glad I don't have to manage it all
