Love Bike

or Couch Bike 2.0. Build for Portland's Pedapalooza "Department of silly bikes" ride. It was quite a hit.

That is too cool. :thumb:

I assume that tail piece of 2x4 is the wheelie bar? :)

You got it. Saved me twice on the first ride.

An improvement is to mount a lamp on the wheelie bar. Battery powered would be a bonus.

Please post a video, this is something I gotta watch in action

Love it! but the handle bar seems to be in the way of the knees.

Friday was an eventful day for the Sofa Bike. First was the company car show, where it won "most original", earning me a $20 Amazon gift-card. It was the hit of the show; I actually gave our VP a ride - literally rubbing elbows with the bug guy. "Powered by software" he said, as I'm a software guy.

Meanwhile I'd posted it in the Free section on Craigstlist. The response was overwhelming and often creative. The #1 and #2 people in the queue flaked out, but #3 was a winner. Rose took the Sofa Bike home, and she's headed to Burning Man in just a couple weeks. So yes, my very own Sofa Bike will be featured on the playa, where it will almost certainly meet its end. I'm super stoked about that.

Not that's out of the way, on to the next project.

I hope Rose sends you pics from Burning Man! :thumb:

Whilst comfortable and fun, that couch will become riddled with bugs of all kinds in no time (ants, spiders, roaches, bedbugs..). Those bugs will then be carried into your house via the person who sat on the couch.

Is it your idea?

I had the sofa bike idea some years ago, googled it, and found a couple hits. None of those designs inspired me, so I eventually came up with this chariot inspired design. This is my second build of this design. Coming up with the drive mechanism, actually quite simple in the end,was key.

Here's a video of version 1.0, inaugural ride at the Columbus Bike Co-op, circa 2016.

How fast does the sofa bike go? That gearing looks like it would be tough to go up the slightest incline.

downtube42 01-25-21 10:05 PM

Walking pace, I suppose. IIRC, imperceptible rises in the road would require passengers dismount.

On my most recent iteration, I pedaled up an incline, did a u-turn, and coasted down. The speed was alarming and a curve was approaching, so I braked fairly aggressively.

Sadly there is no photo evidence, but I'm most certainly the only person to execute a front wheelie on a sofa bike.

Alex57915 01-29-21 05:35 AM

Yes, I am also in love with this.

simson 01-06-22 12:41 AM
