I'd almost forgotten about this discussion. Wonder how much he made charging people to view his collection?

I think he was secretly charging for every page view on eBay. Better check your PayPal!

The seller has posted an inventory of the collection as an update to the eBay listing.

If I had known about this 2 months ago I’d have made a serious run at it.
1. Not enough bikes/frames/parts to ‘flood the market’. Not even close. 2. One of my golden rules still hasn’t changed…”it’s either Campy Record’ or it’s not. 3. Someone asked about eBay fees… 13% plus tax if applicable plus shipping But it’s not available so that’s that. |

I wonder how that all turned out.

It was sold. I don't know the price, but do rue the fact I wasn't in a position to jump on it.

I viewed a similar collection about a month and a half ago.
It was not for sale, but it was purchased in much the same manner. Two men went halves on it, estate of a collector who once owned a shop. One cherry-picked 7-8 special bikes, and got the tools, stands, most of the parts, paraphernalia. The other got the bulk of the bikes, wheels, and some boxes of parts (like 20). The part I viewed had many bikes that would get good reviews here. Probably 6-7 C&V TT bikes, from Rossin to Paramount to Colnago and others. 4 Schwinn Madisons, probably 10 track bikes (including a Fuji Feather). A Merckx (by Ridley) replica of an Hour Record bike used by someone (orange/white aluminum) There were Bottechias, Gios(ii), Colnagos, 3 Renshos, Nagasawas, Zunows, a number of French bikes. Several customs, really a broad spectrum, all packed butt to bellybutton in several rooms. There were a couple of bathrooms that had the tubs full of wheels. There was even a lowly Paramount PDG Series 5. I'm going to guess there were 60 bikes that I viewed. I took a couple of runs at buying anything he'd sell me. No dice. What his plans were, I did not ask. What he paid, I did not ask. I mentioned the collection that is the subject of this thread. He was familiar with it and said, "price could be a bargain, but would have to take a look." He is retired, and said a trip there and back would be fun, something to do, and the fee was not an issue. He said if he went, they'd just skip a $50 lunch that day, but he understood viewing by appointment. I went back, hoping to buy, and he's not changed his mind. He did sell a Howdy Doody bike, 16" wheels, with riveted saddlebags, for $40. I looked hard at a 48" penny-farthing, but $4800 was $3000 too high for my budget. The more you look at those things, the more you want one. Sorta. |
Collector's dream, but (most) spouse's nightmare.

I know he wants to sell the whole collection, but I need a couple a chain ring bolts. Do you think he’d make an exception? No way I’m paying him shipping, though.
