Use 1.75 inch tires on 20 inch 24 MM rims?
I need to replace the tires and tubes on my Bike Friday New World Tourist folder. Thinking about the Schwalbe Marathon or Big Apple. Really want a tire with a reflector built in BTW. The current tires on the bike are 30-406 20x1.35. From what I have read I can use 40-406 20x1.5 with no issues. I ride mainly on pavement but sometimes on hard packed trails. I am going to convert it to electric in the very near future. Any thoughts on these tires or do you have other suggestions?
What are the largest tires I can use on a 20 inch 24 MM rim? Can I go up to 1.75? |
20 inch 24mm, if the rim's inner wide is 24mm, you can use 30 to 62.

Thank you

A handy reference is the Sheldon Brown website. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tyre-sizing.html Scroll down until you see the table in red and green. It also shows you how to accurately measure the width used for this table.

Both Sheldon and Bike Forums are very conservative with regard to tire width v rim width, with a big blind spot around ‘old school’ MTB setups. In the 1990s ‘NORBA’ era, 1.95” tires on 17-19mm rims was pretty much par for the course.
1.95”-2.0” on a 24mm rim, for ‘path’ use, wouldn’t even make us blink. |
