Saris H3 for $640 at REI?

I saw that the Saris H3 is on sale at REI currently. (until 9/5/2022).

I have an older Kurt Kinnetic dumb trainer and have messed around a little bit with Zwift, but never really got into it. The recent post about Rouvy in Moab made me realize there are now good alternatives to Zwift (which I find annoying in many respects), and got me thinking about the winter "rainy" season here.

Is this a reasonably safe purchase? (Yes, I know REI is good about returns, but I would rather not abuse the policy.) I've read mostly positive reviews, but I also realize it is getting a bit long in the tooth.

i can't speak about the Saris but i have a Kicker and i am grateful. i use it a lot in winter here in reno and occasionally in summer when smoke from fires is not good for breathing.

just a quick check on the spec...20% grade and upto 2kw is teh same as teh kicker. i've done the 20% but never the 2000 w. hit about 700 for seconds but thats it. the kicker is all i would ever need and 650 is much better than what i paid for. you will be happy with it.

so, zwift, i got tired of it, same old routes, same old *****. Rouvy i started last winter and liked it becasue of all the new routes. what i do like about zwift is the ability to turn down a road if i want, no can do in rouvy, or fulgaz either. teh route is the route but really nice. i even hit the brakes once entering a round about on my second ride.

i still ride zwift from time to time becasue they let me do 25km each month (i usually stretch that out to 50ish).

I have the Kickr. It’s great and has been very reliable. I logged over 1K miles on the KK dumb trainer and the smart trainer is a lot more fun.
REI has a good return policy. Don’t know anyone that has the Saris. Suggest reading the reviews posted on REI and elsewhere to help in your decision.

REI gives members one year return policy. Plus a 10% dividend a year later.

That's $64 dollars towards something else as long as you keep the Saris.

you can buy one for $384 directly from Saris ATM if that will push you over the edge.

not sure if you have pulled the trigger on this yet but zwift just came out with their own. more $ than this though.

I got the email from Zwift the day after I ordered it!

It arrived and I set it up in my living room. We are in the middle of a heat wave, so I might wind up logging some miles soon.

the saris is better (spec wise), i think i erred on the price, i think they are about the same actually. when i got mine it was about july/august. i rode it once or twice after i got it and shelved it until the weather turned sour. you will find it to come in handy on rainy/hot/smokey/windy days.
