531 mimicry
Spotted this; aside from the "NOT made with..." decals this is so blatant a mimic it's laughable.
Any other charlatans? https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d35e17abe5.jpg |

Araya had a good one... let's see if this pic works.

Liberia tubing on an Oscar Egg, initially thought charlatan was the word, but then smiled and saw that rather as self-irony… or maybe I’m too naive…

I love how they can't even spell Tubing. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2d8c2ad569.jpg Borrowed from bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com without permission, I hope the proprietor doesn't mind the plug... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...62dded172f.jpg The "Awesome" decal isn't trying to fool anyone, it's just being awesome! https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e58b181cd1.jpg This last one was made by Bob Freeman, and it went on a bike that really was made of Reynolds 853, so it's not a ripoff, it's a tribute — albeit probably still technically a copyright infringement. I hope Reynolds would approve. -Mark B |
I believe at least the Reynolds 501 and Raleigh 555 refer to the percentages of the same respective three elements (don't ask me to recall what they are) referred to in 531, 753, 853, etc, so they're not really "mimics". No idea about the others.
Let's not forget Peugeot Carbolite 103. |

These are hysterical. A great addition to the Crappy Tubing Parody Decals (or some such name) thread.:

Plus, 753 and 531 are the same alloy, with and without the quenched-and-tempered heat treatment. How could they have different numbers if they're a "formula" for the alloy? Mark B |

Where is the "420" blunt one?

I don't think that's correct, though I have heard it reported many times over the years. "531" may have referred to some ratio of elements early on (though I'm skeptical of even that), but it's composition changed over the years, yet the numbers didn't.

Reynolds had a booth at the 2015 NAHBS in Louisville, so I had to get a shot! I don't think I told them "you are my hero's", but I'm sure that was the vibe I was giving off. :)
I was wearing an old Raleigh Team jersey at the time, so they knew I was a fan (or a lunatic?) https://live.staticflickr.com/8719/1...ca2935_c_d.jpg full resolution version: https://live.staticflickr.com/8719/1...c7444_5k_d.jpg You can see just how many versions of bike tubing that they made then. Pretty impressive, and a bit confusing, maybe. Steve in Peoria |
