I finally decided to write to FireFly Energy about the possibility of releasing a lead acid battery with their newer technology for bicycle use. Daniel Stewart of FireFly Energy responds:
"Thank you very much for your interest in Firefly Energy. I have to tell you though, that our technology is optimized for batteries with 25 Ah and higher capacity. Our first product, to be launched early next year, is a 100 Ah battery. All this is to say that it's unlikely that we will produce a battery that will be applicable to electric bicycles in the foreseeable future. Thanks again for your interest." Time will tell, but Dan says bicycle users shouldn't hold their breath waiting for this newer technology from FireFly. ;) |

Remember everybody,those " reliable" sources mentioned are just someones opinion, shared also by a few of the other uninformed on that forum that like to tinker and save a penny. My opinion is those three are NOT reliable.
Maybe ok for low power applications. I have all my cells lab tested before using them. Lithium can be found here in USA if you look for it. |

Another eBay source is "volgood". They still have 100% positive feedback and I'll be adding another. I bought two 36v 20ah lifepo4 batteries with DHL shipping for $848.00. So far no complaints. DHL was great, three days from Hong Kong to Ohio with no customs hassle.

I should mention that the operating voltage is just over 40v for a 36v pack. I had planned to use two packs in my Bricycle but my Crlyte controller is not happy on 80plus volts. I've been running a single 36v pack at 35a without any problems.

What is recommended for a trunk bag for a battery?
I got a 36V 18AH NiMH battery and a water resistant trunk bag. This morning was my first trip to work after putting it together this weekend and I think it over heated. I had the controller in the bag as well and it was almost too hot to touch and the battery has little holes in the heat shrink where I think most of the tops and bottoms of the cells are. Is that normal or did it overheat? |
What batteries should I go for as my first one? I don't want some dewalt that I need to fix stuff with. Just some clean and easy ones.

Hi, I am new here. Have decided to make an electric bike with a cyclone chain drive 500W 24V. I was just wondering why I can't use large motorcycle Gel batteries or even two car batteries mounted in a trailer, I realise they will not be as efficient but I only have to go 5 miles to work and they can charge all day there? This seems a sensible alternative as the price of batteries is shocking (more than the motor kit cost me). Thanks in advance Clive.

I do a daily commute of 7 miles with 3 B&B 12V 8AH batteries and an Amped Bikes 500 Watt hub, Cheap and effective. I charge at work. |

Walmart or a motorcycle gel cell. Someone said that these batteries need to be at or near 100% all the time. These batteries are cheap so I am actually of thinking of trying them on my eZip: 24volts. I would tie the batteries in series. Probably a $100 experiment.

but im like really new to the E-bike thing.... Why dont people just use a Dual 12V car battery, that will give the low 24V, but at a very high amp, (ponders) because i keep seeing people going to the big 2KW, Goals from some other fourms, , the batterys I see are so low amps, 10a and 12a, I mean 10a * 36v = 360watts, or you can have a Dual 12v (car batt)but amps closer to like 500amps and UP 24V but at 600a = 14,400 watt's or 14.40kW Is it because the motor control unit(mcu) cant handel that high of amp's? or... The gist of Peukert's effect is that the more current you try to pull from a car battery, the less capacity it will give you. Here's an example: http://www.batteriesinaflash.com/flo...n?currency=USD At the bottom of the page the specs are listed. That particular battery is rated to provide 190 amp hours, but only if you discharge the battery slowly over a 20 hour period. Try and do it in 5 hours and you only get 155 amp hours out of it. That's Peukert's effect. Now imagine how much less capacity you'd get shortening the discharge rate to 15 minutes. There's much more to it than just that. Generally speaking the higher the voltage, the higher the top speed of the motor. It has to do with counter-electromotive force limiting the top speed of the motor. I got one on the way, should be here on Tue, or wed, Its now Friday night, and I got it comming to my work, and I some how ordered a second one., Kinda a good thing, because 1 to mod and 1 to keep stock. *haha* I was told from a few people that the 450watt stock motor can take a battery pushing, 36 volt, @ 20 amps, *any feed back on this.* http://www.smartgauge.co.uk/peukert2.html they will work in more of just a compasitor, mode vs a longer lasting battery. |
