A friend bought a 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser from a coworker, and complains about it endlessly - it's the last year for carburetion before the switch to EFI, so in addition to being slow as hell it also drinks gas at a ferocious rate. He wanted it for trips to the mountains, but it burns so much gas going uphill he kinda soured on it.
I had 2 of those "square body" trucks. The first one was a heavy 3/4 ton with a 454 and stick shift. It was good for about 8 mpg. I worked on it a bit and got it up to 10 mpg, a substantial improvement. It was a 74 so it even had points. The other one was a 77 heavy duty 1/2 ton, 350 with automatic. 10 mpg. I put a more modern overdrive trans with lock up torque converter. As I was scouring my kitchen looking for coffee making implements, I found the long lost aeropress, sans filters. I may have thrown them out when I thought the press was gone for good. I found a cone and cone filters, and used that with good success
