Pickup Trucks Are Getting Bigger
 

And I do not believe drivers are getting any better. More blind spots and longer stopping distances should make things interesting on the highways. For those of you who actually worry about such things. Otherwise...as you were. Pedestrians will take a beating as well as cyclists.

Cars in general have been getting bigger. Where have you been? It's been a few years back but an acquainance bought his wife a sporty looking Jaguar convertible. I stood next to it and it was huge, despite the styling that made it look small from a distance.

The newer cars have more blind spots for certain.

Wider has been a thing for a while. Now that trucks fill the lane width they are going UP as the only direction they can which is increasing the blind spots IN FRONT of the trucks. I am called upon to drive a dualie pickup at work on occasion. It's not even a very high one. It takes a couple of minutes to get used to that thing, which makes the danged thing terrifying to drive if I haven't had to use it for a few months. I adjust the passenger mirror downward a tad so I can see fog lines and other road markings so a glance tells me where those passenger side wheels are in relationship to the dividing lines or edge of the roadway. If I get stuck with that monster truck daily for six weeks no big deal. But my personal car is a Camry which is no help in preparing for driving that work truck. Even the regular F150 seems big enough and it's not even a modern truck. I wouldn't enjoy either of those things any larger in any dimension.

Pickup trucks were designed for farm roads and fields. Just watch someone try to park one at the grocery store in a crowded lot! Now they are marketed as a family car. Ugh.

Don't even get me started on flatbed utility trailers that everyone seems to pull these days.

I have more of a problem with Prius driver, especially the ones with Berny stickers on them

People use bicycles to ride in conditions that they weren't intended for. Why should motor vehicles be any different.

Or are you saying its okay for me to be riled at all the people riding BMX and mountain bikes on the paved roads I ride?

My only issue with new pickups is the nicer versions now only come in 4 door models and are truly butt ugly because of it. No thanks.

How so? Unlike an oversized truck with a less than skillful driver, it's difficult to imagine a situation where your problem could be an actual problem.

That canary yellow Nissan pickup looked awful big as I slid across the hood and up the windshield, across the roof and onto the asphalt. The F350 with doolies that almost curbed me was rather large.

They sneak up on you while texting. Imagine that.

Kind of hard not to hear a pickup.

Being higher up on a pickup, visibility is much better than in a Prius.

All the old farmers in pickups are the best where I live. I get the full lane and friendly waves from them all the time.

Ton's of threads here about large PU drivers and the seeming hostility to lycra clad road cyclists. As a driver I personally find Subaru and Prius drivers to be the most dangerous, under the speed limit in the passing lane, not paying attention, etc... I saw a women in a Prius get on the parkway last week, signaled and moved like she was Moses parting the Red Sea, went from the entrance ramp to the left passing lane, across 2 traffic lanes, only then to refuse to keep up with traffic. Sigh.

Lots of young girls in Prius type vehicles, I find these are the dangerous drivers. They do not pay attention to the road and are on their phone. If you have a lifted truck, just glance over to one of those little cars, the kids are always texting when driving.

Thankfully I don't have problems with either when riding my bikes. The few I do have issues with are so rare, that I could never pin it on one type of vehicle or another.

I have more of a problem with people who cannot even spell "Bernie" correctly.
