STI brake/shifters for BULLHORN?
 

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to see if STI brake/shifters exist for bullhorn basebars? Because they only seem
to be made for drop bars.

I know there is the Shimano DI2 electric drivetrain shifters but that is way too expensive for training only. STI shifters are way more affordable.

Can anyone recommend something for me?

ps.: I have seen some people put STI shifters on a bullhorn but the hand position isn’t quite right. I hope someone comes up with a bullhorn version; I really don’t see how hard it could be for Shimano to make a bar-end version of the STI, unless it’s a plot to make people feel like they NEED to spend the big bucks on the DI2?

Are you also using aero bars, or just the bullhorns?

Just the bullhorns for now, my training environment wouldn’t really be safe for aero bars.

I’ve seen people connecting small “thumb shifters” to the tip of the bullhorn right under where the brake comes out of the bar end, but generally that would imply a slightly different bar end hand postiion due to the shifter being oriented forward (like aero bar bar-end shifters) which is not the position I’m looking for (less stable during acceleration).

STI and DI2 shifters have the benefit allowing you to leave your hands right on BOTH the accessible brake lever positions (either side bar or bar end) and simply switching with your tumb, it’s a lot safer for training/road riding.

I was thinking of a setup like this but at the end of the bullhorn handles...if you can find someplace that sells aero bar brake levers that fit around the bar instead of in the end of the bar. This I can't see that this website sells them. But clearly they exist. Good luck. -- Dan

Honestly, most folks use STI's but adjust the reach to be shorter. That gets rid of a bit of the awkward nature. It's a pretty common thing to do. You can get away with that because the way the bullhorns curve where an STI would be mounted is such that you wouldn't end up colliding with the bar trying to pull the brake after adjusting the reach really short.

Honestly, what is posted above with separate bar ends from the brake just looks awkward as all get out.

Up to you though. I would try the STI's first and adjust the reach shorter if it were me.
