'61 Paramount - fenderless

I know a few of you expressed an interest in seeing this machine w/o fenders:

Excuse the absent freewheel. The rear Rigida rim is damaged (awaiting one from Mkeller); I mounted the wheel solely for the photos.

I love that color, Is that how the fork came or did you strip it?

Those uncut fender stays bothered me every time I looked at a picture of it, so it looks much better to me without the fenders.

They had hacksaws and files in the sixties.

Coppertone, and the fork is from a '73 all-chrome. The fork that was previously mounted to it was a mid-1960's replacement without the requisite eyelets I needed.

It hasn't been fenderless since I built it in 2006. It usually looks like this:

The stays at the bottom of the front fender have been cut, but that's all. Since I'm quite confident the fenders are sitting right (I better be after 4 years), I might as well cut them. Hadn't considered doing so, mainly as I got used to them as-is.

That bike looks sooooooh much better w/o those tacky white plastic fenders with the uncut stays.

Sorry, they're back on ;)

Stays will be cut when I have some spare time.

I have been too busy stuffing my face to do much with the rim. I did take a little bit of time to unlace the hub though so I will get moving on it soon.

That bike just looks more proper with fenders, besides its Winter.

Absolutely. Without them it's like an older uncle in a speedo. Who cares if he won the masters class swim meet last year, he's still an uncle... in a speedo. Put on some shorts for crying out loud.

Take your time. I wouldn't mind having a bit of extra time to get rid of a flipper - helps pay for it.

It does look a bit unbalanced otherwise. Fenderless almost demands that it be finished with Coppertone bar tape. Funny thing, the original catalog photo is close to being a dead-ringer for the fenderless build:

What I cannot figure out are the rather obvious black headlugs and fork crown in the catalog sketch. The Paramount that thinks its a PX-10

Waaaaaaay better, thats too bad its not staying that way. If I can ride year round without fenders in northern ontario surely someone in florida can!

Here's what a Coppertone in Spring looks like around my parts!
