Get it now or Coronavirus may mean wait a year

FYI if you are considering a new gravel bike this year. Manufacturers have started alerting dealers that because so many components come out of factories that are shut down because of the Coronavirus, bikes that would have been shipped out this spring may be delayed months or OR LONGER. This likely will impact bike supply this year much more than the previous tarriffs issue did.

Somehow I don't think sick and dying people are less important than getting a bike. The needs of the many outweigh those of the few (or the one). It could easily be YOU.

I did not perceive dwmckee as suggesting that “sick and dying people are less important than getting a bike.” In fact, I really don’t know how you got that from his post.

It will be all over soon. If it went on a little longer, it would be a good opportunity to set up a bike manufacturing business.

I'm not sure how you got that either out of a simple statement of consequential facts.

After the tsunami in Japan I blew up the head in my WRX and went shopping for another. The one I ultimately bought was shipped on the last boat that left Fuji before the tsunami. While I was shopping many dealerships just told me they couldn’t get a car. A couple of dealerships had cars on that ship and were willing to sell it to me under normal prices once it arrived. Only one dealership (Santa Rosa) tried to gouge me. That guy not only wanted a $2000 mark up over MSRP on the car he had in stock but as we waited he kept emailing me that the other offers were fake. I’m sure he eventually found a sucker.

Rollfast 02-15-20 05:31 AM

I based that on your worries about getting a bicycle over a disaster. And it's not like there are a lot of good used ones or bikes in stock already. whether or not it causes a shortage in your mind means little to the tens of thousands of Chinese who have this new Covid-19 illness.

Itt's not a humane concern. Please try not to make such morbid speculations.

I got this from Lynskey a few days ago - while it doesn't explicitly attribute the delay to coronavirus I can't help but wonder. I'm not particularly dismayed by waiting another three weeks - this stuff happens. That said, GRX components already seemed a little slow to trickle out, so I hope there isn't a further delay for those.

"We have received news from our fork manufacturer that will affect the completion time of your order. We have been informed from our fork manufacturer that there currently complications via transportation internationally that have heavily delayed our order of Pro Gravel Forks. We were initially expecting the fresh batch of forks to arrive this week. However, we have received a notification that we will not be receiving the Pro Gravel forks until March 10th. Once the forks arrive here, we will be able to quality check the forks into inventory and begin working to build the complete bike orders. This will have your order shipping between the dates of March 11 - March 18th."

I work in infectious diseases, have serious concerns about our ability to control this virus, and have no problems with people also being worried about the impact that it will have on the global economy. The OP didn’t imply disregard for the people suffering under Chinese quarantine or from viral infection. If they did, I’d react the same as you.

srode1 02-15-20 04:55 PM

The potential ramifications spread way beyond bicycles - if the factories don't open there soon, there will be lots of businesses shut down do to supply issues. I feel terrible for the Chinese that are going through this or anyone else for that matter. It's likely going to dwarf any natural disaster in modern times by just about any global measure you use.

Rollfast 02-15-20 04:57 PM

Call me a socialist or whatever, but you aren't the only ones to be affected. We're all affected. And we have to help them to help ourselves. We have to end this disease.

unterhausen 02-15-20 05:54 PM

I don't see how buying or not buying has anything to do with helping them with the disease. They still have to eat

I think you really described yourself accurately with your signature line.

We can be concerned with multiple factors at the same time. Trying to heal sick people and keeping global supply chains open are not mutually exclusive.

And I hope you realize that an economic recession will have negative impacts on people’s lives and lifespans.

A wokescold on bike forums. Who would have guessed

shoota 02-15-20 09:38 PM

This is classic. The perpetually woke and offended, ladies and gentleman.

Rollfast 02-15-20 09:53 PM

Oh HUSH, Send it to P&R then, I won't ever go there.

If you've got this you aren't thinking of eating or working again, simply recovering and surviving.

There was no need for this thread to start with. Sorry, but these are human beings.

nobody in this thread has said or even suggested that 'we' are the only ones affected.
and if you asked, I bet everyone would agree with your statement that the disease needs to end.
Your posts have nothing to do with the topic.

Everybody here recognizes that this is affecting real people. Yet again- there was o need to say that ad everyone would logically agree with you. It was beneficial to start the thread because I learned of another industry that is greatly affected by this outbreak, and it happens to be one which impacts a hobby of mine.
it's absolutely OK to discuss how markets and entire economies are and will be impacted by this outbreak.

I work in logistics. The near shutdown of containers in china has already affected the volume of over the road freight moving from CA into the rest of the country. That in turn affects freight moving from the rest of the country into CA. And around and around it goes. The interconnectedness is massive and like you said, it affects us all.

The world's second largest economy is currently crippled. It would be absurd not to discuss the possible ramifications in the short term and long term.

Rollfast 02-16-20 12:08 AM

I must be lucky then as I am not so reliant on it right now, down to my vintage Goodyear balloon tires. And I have relatives who made it though the Depression and several downturns afterward and we learned how to keep going. Nobody says it will be easy. Tariffs were already hurting freight shipments. Covid-19 didn't cause all of it. The terrible coordination of, well, I don't want a bot cutting a post again like in December...and I don't deal with P&R at all.

But don't call me woke. It's a mild insult anyway. Since my kidneys are failing being called woke is nothing.

And have a better night.

This is a supposed to be a thread about how the Corona virus has and could continue to affect international commerce. Please keep any and all other Corona virus talk out of this thread. Thank you.

cb400bill 02-16-20 10:53 AM

By the way, I work in the Audio industry and we are running into product shipment delays, too.

The OP owns a fairly large and high-volume bike shop which specializes in gravel bikes, and he was offering some pretty salient info/advice for a group of people who are passionate about gravel cycling. Having plans to buy a new bike does not make anyone a bad person, even if there is a corona virus outbreak.

unterhausen 02-16-20 04:24 PM

Moderator's note: Let's drop the points in Rollfast's posts, please. I think there probably could be a thread along those lines in P&R, but not here

Its a good point. Large portions of that country shut down a month ago, and are not scheduled to to be back to normal for at least another month. It could be good if you need something not from China that china consumes, but bad if you are dependent on sourcing from China. We have seen this with Tsunamis, Trade issues, Union Strikes - but typically these are short lived. The virus issue may be a couple of months, or a couple of years. No one knows at this point...

I live outside of Philadelphia and there was a piece on the radio that the transit company in New Jersey across the river had to scramble because they weren't able to get a huge supply of swipe cards for fares from their supplier in China so they had to spend a good amount extra to get them from another supplier in the UK.
