Fiesta TTT Tuesdays. Warmup and then 20K.

Got a nice 1 hour loop with 1500 feet of climbing various hills. I get a lot of zone 1 and a lot of zone 4-6, not much in between. Did that this morning to leave time to go to the gym this afternoon.
Gym is sidewalk workouts, so no racks. I'll have to get used to cleaning the barbell and doing front squats. Also plan to stick to dumbbell bench press for obvious reasons. It's been a couple months so I started super light today. Did a few sets of 135 lb front squats, a few extra cleans cuz I'll need the practice for heavier weight, bench press and rows with measly 50 lb dumbbells, and 185 lb romanian deadlift. Lots left in the tank. Plan to add 10-20 lbs per session as I get my strength back. It's $20 per session so I'll probably go only 2 or 3 times per week. Thinking alternate todays workout with deadlift/press/pull ups. Proabably skip a second day of quads due to cycling. |
Recovery Week; still going to put in volume just easy volume.
|
Mega Pretzel route in Watopia this morning, good for 3:45 with "66 miles" containing "5,000 ft elevation". Mid z2 AP, got some top 5's on some of the segments on the route. Did some emailing, a little work, a little Facebooking. I could see myself doing more of my "mid length" (3-4 hr) long rides on the trainer. Went by pretty quick..
|
Next four days off, we're going on a mini honeymoon to Cerro Alto (central CA) to camp and then to Napa for wine tasting.
|
Ran on Monday.
3x8's on Tuesday 60' tempo on the TT bike this morning. Still 10lbs overweight, but starting to feel a little like an athlete again. |

I haven't ridden a road bike for over 6 months, but I thought that I would check in here. My racing days are over. I have mild afib that can be treated with drugs instead of ablations, but it limits my heart rate so no more sprinting. Actually I was better at the 1K attack than a pure sprint, but you know what I mean. Racing is over.
Good to see botto posting again! He is the straw that stirs the drink here, Instead I am dealing with a miniature Aussie shepherd that I inherited her from a line of people that thought it would be great to have one and then realized they are smart and need a lot of work and she was passed down a couple of times to me. I can deal with it. A few years ago I had an American Foxhound that I had to put down and all my friends asked if I would get another dog. I told them that some day the next dog would appear and it did. It took several years. Really like the dog, though. Very smart. |
More sweet spot for me, I am so one dimensional lol CTL currently 83 with TSB -11. Although I have my training calendar to have me peaking during CX season, I found out today that one of my favorite 2 day CX events in November was cancelled for 2020, so that's a bummer and maybe not a good sign of things to come if other venues decide not to allow races to happen. So I should probably give myself a little more leeway to go out and just do a fun long endurance ride (would be fun to ride 100miles and see how I do with only 2hr max length sessions) but I probably won't lol

I have a group of riding friends back in Montana who put on a "Working Man's Training Camp" every May where they ride 50 miles a day on the same route at 5:30am each day for a week, in lieu of jetting off to some warm, exotic location in February. The idea is that you can get relatively big miles in every day before work and since it's the same route every day people can join where they can if they don't make the start. I'm thinking about doing my own solo for type 2 fun next week. We can do 2up rides here in Scotland now, but I don't know if I'll get any takers with the early start (I love early rides!).
I've gotten the tiniest bit of insight into what the pros deal with in training and in stage races in that depending on how hard you go day to day, you can "recover" during the week. |
Actually riding a lot more lately. CTL is near 50 for the first time in 2.5 years. 45 hours and 740 miles over the last ~30 days.
Feels good to be riding like this again. Now just have to work on getting my power numbers up. Did a 20 minute test the other day and im only about 20 watts down from I typically have been this time of the year, surprisingly. The volume must be helping |
Another week of not much. I did the Tuesday ride I posted, plus a bit of RPE zone 2.5 on my way to the social Wednesday night ride. Hovering in the mid 60s, figure I can pick up and build more base any time. Got another gym session yesterday. No training this weekend - supposed to be ~80 and sunny at the Arroyo Seco gorge this weekend so gonna head down with my wife early tomorrow and camp a few miles in, get a lot of splashing around time. It's one of those hike/swim/float on the river spots, kinda like Yuba except less water so gotta go before it dries up.

Did sixty miles on Friday solo in 3 hours.
Saturday did 120 miles with a teammate with 10k+ ft of climbing. I made a conscious effort to eat starting at hour 1, and it made a ton of difference. Was struggling on climbs, but felt mostly OK on flats. Sunday did a short 2h loop. Surprisingly legs didn't feel like a complete ****. Was even able to do something approaching z3 towards the end. |
Same old same old for me. This weekend there were a lot more cyclists and groups on the road. We road the coast on Saturday and Camp Pendleton to San Clemente on Sunday.
|
CTL finally cracked 60 yesterday.

Did my 2hr 2x Epic KOM SST Zwift ride today. First one at 85% then was feeling more peppy for the second and hit 91% which clocked in at 23' and a 30 day PR. I also got to wear the KOM jersey on the descent for a bit! My time was only good for 2nd on the leaderboard, but the top guy logged off! I only had it for about 2 minutes though, some young whipper snapper took it back from me by the time I hit the bottom. Should have grabbed a screenshot!

Spent a week in the mountains and coming back to sea level feels great. FTP / VO2 power numbers feels about 10-15w higher than a month ago, but even so, still a long way to go. I also hired a coach, something I should've done years ago when racing. I can already tell I'm going to get faster in a short amount of time...

TTT Tuesday on Fiesta.

Direct sun is a turd. Man, upper 80's felt like upper 90's. Team road ride then cyclocross practice from about 5:00 to 7:30. Rode road for 1:10 or so Z2 then cross for 1:00 in z3 with one hot lap.
Hot lap was a top 3 pr for that course including my races from last year. Woot. I felt a lot smoother after following our team organizer first lap listening to him narrate the course to his younger son on the warmup lap. I could have gone a bit faster, but I was focusing on getting cleaner faster lines. The uphill straights I just cruised up easy, no skill needed there. Getting those faster corners and transitions right saves tons of time. Despite taking the uphills "easy", my lap times were within 10sec of my all out race lap times. Better "flow". Would have been quicker if I aired the tires out a touch more. I was too high a pressure, yet again. Need to go tubeless on that wheelset!!!! Given the heat, good day. Low TSS given lower zones, but good stuff. |
I'm in the middle of week 4 of trainerroad SSB2 HV and it's becoming a bit of a slog lol I like the sweet spot work but it has been a lot and my basement temp/humidity are making the RPE higher, but I'm trying to embrace that sort of thing (I have 3 fans, including 2 lasko pro's so at least I have good stuff for air flow). It's harder to tell if I'm making progress with the training plan, but today my 15min intervals had my HR cap off around 160, which is where it tends to be in more favorable temps, so hopefully I'm either becoming heat adapted and/or maybe some additional FTP gains may be in store.
My goal at the moment is to do an outdoor 100 mile ride on the 4th instead of the last of the tough indoor stuff as a way to a) finally get my road bike out on the road (it's been inside since August) and b) see how I do going from just 2hr trainings to 100 miles with nothing in between (I know I can do it, but it'll be interesting to do nonetheless) |

some tired legs high rpe for today's 90min endurance session (indoors as usual for me lol), might be a fueling issue. I've been eating less, not totally deliberately but just trying not to be constantly snacking, which I excel at. Yesterday I was 159 and this morning I was 157 so I might need to up the calories today for the big weekend workouts. On the plus side, I'm back to being officially over 4w/kg (4.01 is still over lol) and only 2lbs off what has been my usual fighting weight of 70kg

Something is wrong. Went from 305w on Epic KOM two weeks back to today only like 225 on the TT bike on a 10'er try this morning outdoors. It's a restrictive fit on that bike, but I can't imagine it being that bad. Did 24.5mph on a pretty flattish route with rougher tarmac, so I believe the power figure this time.
I don't get it. Less than a month ago did the SST short on Zwift on the TT bike in little less aggressive position at a lot more power and good HR. I dunno if I overtrained or it got hot or what. Lactic pain didn't really feel bad, it was all in the heart and lungs. Freaking slow as balls, freaking low ass power. Super super frustrated. I really don't get it. Maybe the 305w was a bad spindown on the Kickr to the generous side of things. Either way,.... ****! |
Did a Zwift TTT with some buddies from the San Diego Velodrome yesterday. It was interesting. Ended up with about 40' at about 4.3 w/kg. Hurt pretty bad towards the end.
It's so much harder to coordinate then a real world TTT as you might imagine. We had a rough plan outlined at the start with 8 riders, some of whom fell back of course. It was tough to keep that rotation in line as people got dropped or were generally just fatigued. Voice meeting on Zoom. Also the draft in Z is way less than real life as well. I was doing my pulls at 5.0 feeling fine but then realizing that I had to be a bit more conservative as I wasn't able to recover as much as real life for various reasons. For the real world TTT's I do (with different guys), the pulls are closer to 6.0 w/kg for me. Much bigger disparity in power. Also we do shorter pulls, but that's probably because it's easier to coordinate and there is less fitness disparity than our Zwift group last night where three of us were taking much longer pulls. |
Zwift, I find the draft is measly unless it is an event does the "full draft" option. I wish Zwift would enable draft for TT bikes for only TTT races. That'd be freaking cool. You have to TTT right now in road bikes, otherwise no draft.
I've done two TTT for Team Type 1 in the WRTL series stuff. Not for a while though, it usually wrecks my week to do 40min bouncing it off the limiter. |
Ya. I took my (actual/real world) TT bike out this morning to do a quick 1x25' on Fiesta Island at tempo, and felt a lot better than I expected to with a solid SST off feel. Was a bit haggard last nite before bed.
Going for 6+ hrs tomorrow (road ride). |
Did a few jumps at the track, followed by 10 minutes at 106,102, and 98% with 5' rbi. Suprathreshold gives a really lousy TSS/difficulty ratio.
