I imagine you would have different lengths for the back when they went 40 x4 to 36 x3, but that's another subject. The only difference for the front is the number of spokes goes from 32 to 36. Cross pattern, hub, rim, all the same. Leads me to wonder if I couldn't use the chart as a starting point and just go a size or two up or down...

I'll pull out the calipers and see what I can do by way of measurements. I actually have two Dynohub front wheels to build this fall/winter - a standard 32 hole and the oddball 36 hole. I've also got another set of Schwinn 3 speed wheels to build using parts I have around. I rebuilt several boxes of hubs last winter, I guess I'm building wheels next... It's never done.

FM Hub
I had a 700c wheel built around an FM Hub. I think I posted photos maybe a year ago.
I haven’t been able to ride much this past year. Today I took it out, and noticed gear noise in Normal gear to the point it drowned out the pawl clicking. All the gears work and the other three sound OK. If the gears are loud when they are just idling is that a bad sign for the hub. It seemed to quiet down after I rode a few miles. |

Look for a 1/8" chain with bushed pins. It will last a lot longer than the bushingless stuff that seems to be all that the bike shops near me stock. You can still get bushed chain from any industrial supplier, or buy/find a chain from a garage door opener. It is long enough to do 4 or 5 bikes, and even one taken from a discarded unit will have little to no wear.

I run an Izumi 1/8 with my '53 Sturmey FW four speed on the '51 Sun Wasp. The chain packing oil even smells good. 3speedslow, When I bought the hub, I removed the cones and driver, resurfaced the cones, filled the hub with SAE30, regreased the bearings with Phil wood grease, and put it back together. I know I had the wheel built during the pandemic. By the time I finished the build, I was basically unable to ride. I am just now getting out now maybe 5 miles at a pop. I will shoot some oil in before I ride it again. |
