Hey people... just received an e-mail from a lady in London who is looking for a shop that can help her with 3 speed parts and wonder if anyone here knows of one that still remembers how these work.
She has a Raleigh Wayfarer that she would like to restore and needs an indicator spindle and a new drive cog. |

Any one have any good tips for removing and installing the front wheel. It seems like it takes me more effort than it should.

Today, I hired a 20 year old college student to help me with bike work. He had never worked on bikes before. He didn't know how to use a wrench, but I taught him a ton.
After we finished tuning up a 1979 Panasonic Sport 500, he took it for a test ride and got lost. I went to pick him up on my Rudge 3-speed. I told him to swap bikes. He asked what it is with 3-speeds. I said, "They're charismatic. You can't get on one and not smile." He tried, and sure enough, it was true. He yelled, "You're right!" smiling all the way. |

this guy in UK (Surrey, I think) has the parts but he isn't a mechanic.

Well, I think I finally solved the shifting problems on my '69 Sports. A page or so back I described that it was slipping in 2nd and 3rd, but shifted fine in first. A clutch replacement didn't make a difference. The indicator wasn't a problem as it was slipping without the indicator being attached to the gear cable. I read online that a worn gear ring might cause this problem, but on inspection nothing looked particularly worn. I figured I would just replace as many parts as I could with what I had in the bin: new gear ring, new planetary cage, new pawls (and I'm guessing it was the pawls that were worn). I was reminded what a PIA it is to install those pawl springs just right (particularly when one is too lazy to go and get one's reading glasses). And, of course, I installed the low-gear pawls backwards the first time, so 2nd and 3rd worked fine, but 1st didn't engage. It took a couple of tries and more swearing at pawl springs before I got that correct. So it's shifting great in the stand, and once it stops raining, I'll try it out on the road.

The frame is one of the Eastman Roadsters; an Indian-made copy of the Raleigh DL-1. Supposedly those are 66 degree angles but the reality is closer to 64 degrees on the seat and 65 degrees on the head. Considering the quality on the rest of the frame, missing an angle by a degree or two doesn't come as any surprise... |

I know someone near me who has two 3-speed models, both mens. One is looks like a 21" frame and the other looks like a 20" frame.

doh- I'm 6'2". Thanks though. I was all wound up but I've got to get this freakin' Cannondale done before I can take on anything else. It will show up when it is supposed to.
23" or 25", new and rough is good. There's one about two hours from me but it was just listed as "mens three speed so who know. |
