Point Loma to Del Mar, with a loop around Fiesta Island on the way back.

diphthong 06-17-19 11:57 PM

just over 40 miles with visits to balboa park, little italy and the embarcadero before heading north along morena, up jutland and into north clairemont. wriggled through north clairemont to the 805 freeway area and societe brewing. then south through kearny mesa via convoy st. and into mission valley and a final payback climb up texas st.

diphthong 06-18-19 07:55 PM

got outta town and nibbled at the western end of the san berdoos via ca hwy 138. parked near the 15/138 intersection. roughly 14 miles along hwy 138 till the road turned up and in to the mtns. and boy, did it ramp up for the better part of 3 miles. some serious out of the saddle moments. eventually crested the
high point by old mill rd. turnoff. noodled and toodled around before hitting the quaint hamlet of crestline and lake gregory. rode up to ca hwy 18 to head east to running springs and big bear but the legs denied services. rode back to lake gregory, ascended old mill rd. and descended the 138. hit a headwind once past the silverlake reservoir but stopped at the little silverlake general store abo 5 miles for some ice cream and kicked it in the shade while chatting with a local about vintage steel frames. traffic was low, road quality generally good and the weather would have been tough to improve upon.

Mt. Soledad. Twice.

diphthong 06-25-19 12:13 AM

a local 40 miles on the ‘85 steel pinarello that included an errand on the tail end and a late lunch around the 25 mile mark. started in the san diego metro area, hit
balboa park, dtown, little italy and the waterfront. then went east to escape the june gloom and get some warmer miles. mission accomplished. happy to come across some new pavement in places that really needed it.

diphthong 06-25-19 08:13 PM

took the train up to union station in dtown la. was undecided about whether to do a century via big tujunga canyon to aliso canyon to placerita canyon to
sand canyon/camp 9/little tujunga canyon and back to dtown via laurel canyon...or just crush miles on bike paths. ended up crushing miles on bike paths.
behind on the personal riding goals. took mission to huntington (super wide until monrovia!) ne of dtown la through alhambra, south pasadena, san marino,
monrovia and duarte. hooked up with the sgrt trail and did 34.75 miles to trail's end in seal beach. ugh. boy, is the sgrt ruff in places. that perennial headwind
along with meh pavement. still the fastest way north/south through the la basin. upper stretches from encanto park down to the santa fe dam are still okay tho.
hit a combo of pch and the various bike paths thru the state beaches in oc until the riding thru pendleton stretch. more pch from o-side until i called it quits in
encinitas, hit the modern times brewing tasting room in encinitas on the 101 across from the la paloma theater, then caught the coaster back home.
got significantly rained on-twice (seal/sunset/huntington beaches and laguna beach/monarch bay). had my first husky boy burger in laguna on pch since i was at
mile 82 and needed something before pizza port in san clemente. it'll be my last. sun was out for about 15 minutes all day.

Kitchen Creek.

diphthong 07-02-19 01:09 AM

a relatively mellow 35 miles through kensington, city heights, barrio logan, along the waterfront, past san diego airport and over to eppig brewing tasting room on the water in point loma.
really nice day and solid happy hour vibes there. tore myself away from there and rode up washington st. into mission hills, thru hillcrest then back home. late start and some regret
about not being able to make it at least a 50-miler.

diphthong 07-02-19 08:17 PM

san diego to julian and back century. got up to 84 degrees and it was pretty windy once up in cuyamaca rancho state park and
along the 8 freeway corridor until el cajon on the way home. traffic not too bad and not that many cyclists out. kicking myself
for starting an hour late and therefore having to miss out on alpine brewing in alpine and grand ole bbq in flinn springs due to time
constraints. next time.

26 mile round trip down to the Long Beach marina downtown (across from the Queen Mary). It was a slow ride. We took the bike path.

Nachoman 07-03-19 02:03 PM

A three island tour. Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Shelter Island.

diphthong 07-10-19 06:36 PM

a 103 mile tour of orange county with fellow forumite Tycho Brahe dragging me along about 80 miles of it. took the train up from san diego to santa ana. rolled thru old towns of santa ana, orange and tustin before taking newport north to scr (santiago canyon rd). a little side
trip up modjeska canyon rd and back on scr, hanging a left at cook’s corner and down live oak into trabuco cyn. up to antonio then crown valley pkwy and eventually made the climb up nyes from pch. ugh. pch the rest of the way to the back bay and some noodling around tustin and irvine.

The grandchildren and I have been doing a couple of 5 mile loops through El Dorado Park in Long Beach. They're 10 and 13 y/o without a huge amount of cycling experience so we've been doing these rides through the park.

Should take them on Tue night to watch the racing. There are juniors too. I commute and ride by El Dorado on way home and I stop for a bit and watch. Maybe seeing other kids racing will be cool for them to see.

Some of those OC roads like Santiago and Live Oak-Trabuco never get old to me. Nice ride!

seeing a riding posse that large. may have been enjoying a mexican lager at bootlegger bar at crystal cove state park when you rode past...

Thanks for the reminder. I completely forgot that was back on again. I'm always looking for something to keep them busy.

They did that to me a few summers ago... finding out about a 15 mile "detour" after 70+ miles isn't particularly fun.

I don't know why they can't put a sign up by the exit where they'd prefer you to get on the freeway.

a) That's got to be at LEAST 14 inches! What's the problem?

Nice to know he was apologetic, I"m sure you were nicer than I would have been and probably got better results as a consequence :innocent:

14 inches from my wheel. Much closer to my shoulder. I actually flinched my shoulders inward.

If he hadn't stopped a bit ahead these would have been sent to FedEx. I got on sidewalk and approached passenger side and motioned to talk. Asked him if he knew how close to me he came. Sadly he honestly didn’t remember passing me just a bit earlier. I explained how if his mirrors were at normal height they’d have clipped my head. He seemed truly apologetic and apologized several times. Im normally not cool headed but Maybe all the close passes on my commute have made me “accept” that’s how it is. I wished him a safe day and gave him a fist bump. Hopefully the interaction will result in at least one driver who pays more attention
