Wireless RD-9070???

What the hell are we looking at here? Doesn't look like my RD-9070; mine has a wire and no lights.

Shimano is overdue to release a new version groupset. You just found it! RD-9170 is the guess at the name.
People have been publishing Shimano patent applications for months and guessing it would be wireless, with maybe a wired option for backwards compatibility.

If they go wireless, does that mean I'll have to plug in four things to charge instead of one?

That'll mean I have four times the likely hood of a battery going dead on a ride. And if they are differing drain rates on the battery, then I'll be playing roulette to some extent as to what and when to charge something.

How does SRAM deal with this? Is it not the horrible thing I imagine it to be?

t's a pain already having to hook lights and cyclometer up to charge. And change battery in my helmet. As well as the little walkie talkie thing I just got to communicate to others with me and at home.

I guess the wall I park my bike next to just needs to be one big wireless charger. <grin>

a wired option would be great.

This looks to be a test bench of some sort, maybe for a chain wax manufacturer, based on the flakes seen here and there. And that's not a light on the derailleur, it's light reflecting off of the derailleur - you can see those reflections on the silver bits, too. When the light goes from red to green, the drive starts, so I'm going to assume that these are indicator light for the test set-up. In the video, you can also see that this is sitting on the smallest cog, so no wire or shifting necessary.

Shimano isn't doing full wireless, they're gonna go half wireless like the FSA group. And a wireless 9070 is a double oddity, since R91xx didn't go wireless.

It's definitely some sort of demonstration rig, but I'm tipping it was to demonstrate 11s Di2.

I might've half bought the reflection theory (but not really, take another look at the vid), except where the plug is supposed to go, there's no plug. Those lights are shining through translucent black plastic, where on the standard unit that spot is black anodised aluminium.

Pretty well-finished part for a prototype or whatever.

I have two batteries in the shifters, no idea how long they last, a long time. Two on the derailleurs. They are interchangeable. So if one dies, just leave the good battery on the rear.

Honestly, it looks like a plain old 9070 Di2 RD that just doesn't have a cable plugged in. Not sure why you think it is 'wireless' and not just unplugged. Or for that matter why you think it has 'lights' that aren't just reflections of light sources in the room.

So are these lights shining through solid aluminum, then?

They're reflections, dude.

Kimmo 05-23-21 06:49 PM

Okay, but it's shifting without a wire plugged in.

Oops, now I look at it again, there's no shift, never mind :/

No, it's not. The footage starts at ~1:07. You can even see the reflection, of the guy starting the machine, in the plexi in front of the rig -

Yeah nah, nothing to see here, move along 😞
