42mm gravel tire on 19mm wheel, good or bad idea?

I have a set of DT Swiss r470 tubeless wheels and want to mount Specialized’s Rhombus 42mm tire for my gravel bike to do bike packing.

dtswiss’s web site says this is a possible combination with a recommended air pressure (see link).

What are the pros and cons of this wheel width/tire width combination?

one pro that motivates me; not buying another set of wheels.

42mm tire on a 19mm rim. The "C" goes with the 700. And yes, it'll be fine on that rim. You probably won't be able to use the lower pressure you'd get away with on a wider rim, but it will for sure work.

I doubt you'll get any better informed guidance than that, even here on BF!

That was actually a pretty normal XC setup in the 26” era; 1.95” tires on 17-19mm rims.
You can’t go crazy low with the air pressure (although I guess tubeless would mitigate that) but that’s more to prevent pinch flats, than unseating the beads.

+1
My all-time favorite setup back then was Hutchinson Python Airlites in 26" x 2.0" mounted on Mavic X517's. When Stan's conversion kits became available, it was no problem to go tubeless with that same setup, either. I ran them at sub-30psi once tubeless happened.

A couple of years ago I bought a new Swobo Accomplice single speed bike. It came with Alex AT480 622x15 rims and 42mm Kenda Euro Trek tires. The rims measure 19mm outer. An odd choice and you could tell the tire was too wide for them but it worked fine. I did swap to smaller tires after a few rides but I had planned that anyway.

DOH! My bad on the typo!
