That racer you were following finished the event in 8th overall. They interviewed her and she is just a kid. Might have a bright future as she is obviously a good climber. I saw her in a couple breakaways in the mountains.

I enjoyed the race, especially the mountain stages. I hope it goes on.

I had friction bar-end shifters on my touring bikes. I broke the rear derailleur cable in Kentucky somewhere. I had a spare cable with me, the kind with ferrules on both ends. I used my nail clippers to remove the unneeded end.

Have you looked into aftermarket cables yet?

I was reluctant to stop using down tube shifters but now I wouldn't want to go back. I used to stick my finger into the front tire occasionally.

which stretch is that? i've only ridden that series of MUPs a couple times, and the parts where one might want to hammer it always seem pretty crowded and unsafe/unsuitable for anything other than a leisure cruise. especially the san andreas trail section from a bit south of the trailhead to the dam, and then again towards the southern end of sawyer camp. it's not necessarily crazy crowded like the two MUPs i'll willingly ride on (crissy field and sausalito-mill valley) but the combination of people, strollers, dogs, cyclists, and sharp turns and rollers seems especially dangerous!

I did a nice relaxing 68 miles today, including doing Old La Honda with the goal of keeping my HR well below LT. Mostly, my HR was in the 140s, with some 130s and some 150s, but mostly Z3 the whole way. Of course, this led to one of my slowest times for the climb, but I decided not to go full "Puke At The Top" intensity. Then, descending 84, I was a total coward, so that was THE SLOWEST descent of 84 I've ever done - 4 mph slower than my best!

BUT, but not burning all my matches on OLH, I had plenty of gas for a nice long ride. Imagine my surprise when I started being hit with raindrops! Yes, raindrops, in July! Not much rain though it was enough to completely wet the pavement a couple places. It was nice and cooling, so I didn't mind.

I said that until I started losing gears one morning.

nice. i also did 68 today, but heading north, with no huge climbs. no raindrops but dense, wet fog at the start which had the road completely wet and dripped off my helmet just like rain. and then it disappeared for full sun a very short stretch later.
