A well-made 1 piece crank set is a great thing- last week I cleaned and re-greased a one piecer on my Henderson and it was nice and simple.

Most of the '100 year anniversary" bikes I've seen have been complete junk, but yours is lugged and features cotterless cranks. Anybody got the slightest idea when Columbia began making lugged frames?

If you don't want it you can always send it to me... :)

Both have Sturmey Archer AW hubs. Bought at garage sales; $5 each in working order though the brown one needs new tires. Yellow bike was bought for this specific purpose at my wife's request. I used the front caliper brakes and trigger shifter on another bike.

My aunts old boyfriend (years and years ago) was part of the family who owned/operated Columbia Bicycles. Kind of neat.

'73 Columbia Tourist - mostly original. Saddle has been replaced with a white Messenger, and the grips with a pair of white flat-ends.

Forgot the year of this one - probably late '70s. Columbia Tourist V 5-speed. And for the folks who have a serious problem seeing spaghetti cable routing, this is what it looked like when I flipped it:

That 5 star is an interesting one. It's interesting noting all the minor variations in construction from the different years in these. Thanks for posting your pics everybody.

Finally got the 1936 Columbia finished. Nice, but I'd forgotten since I last rode it 50 something years ago, just how heavy it is!

A couple weeks ago, I passed up a Columbia tandem at a flea market. It was a 5 speed with a rear drum brake. May have been ten speed at one time, but it looked like the cranks had been changed. Otherwise, it was in pretty good shape. They wanted $75 for it. I am starting to regret not buying it. My wife wouldn't have been able to argue, either, since it was my birthday.

And, did you see the tall trike? It had a 26" front wheel and 12" rear wheels. He had some kind of internal gearing and brake on the rear. The seat was at least 5 or 6 feet off the ground.

Nope, I passed on it too, probably should have grabbed it, but I just dragged home the remains of a Schwinn Twin to rebuild. I missed the trike! Sounds insane,

I'm having a hard time finding information about the older Columbias with my inadequate Google skills. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Oldroads.com has a lot of helpful info on vintage bikes (although navigation is clunky and it's hard to get around) and I suggest going there if you haven't already.

Personally, I have a '66 Columbia, but I can't find the proper model name anywhere. My bike is even on oldroads.com, but the date is incorrect---I've checked the serial numbers---and there's no model name in sight. Oh well.

Anyhow, I'll post pictures once I get it painted and put back together!

Don't know the date of this 5-speed yet, but just got it back into ridable condition.

Found this one at the local thrift for $15. Honestly a little steep for their bike prices usually, but still a good find. I'm cleaning it up for a friend. French derailleurs, shifters, and rear hub. German front hub. I'll put up more pictures when she's all shined up. I hope to put some nice whitewalls on her if I can find some for less than a fortune.

That black Columbia Tourist 5 reminds me of my 1971 Raleigh Sprite. The Huret deraileur and top tube shifter are basically the same. Hope yours rides as well as mine does. One of my favorite bikes! Like those fenders! I saw a men's 1970 10-speed columbia (red with chrome fenders) at a garage sale this summer. Original owner, great original shape...$20. It wasn't a good fit for me, so I passed on it. Did think of buying it just for those fenders, though!
