Next week I go to fifty miles a day.
I am currently riding 40 miles per day. I have to ride a lot of loops around this foolishness; it keeps me on my toes. I have not been able to use some of the real estate I have in the past because of road work but it is finishing up just in time for me to go big as I always do. I have already lost 12 pounds and my wife says even my face is thinner. With the hot weather approaching I may get down to 130 pounds this year. I am 75. I retired in 2015 and I swear I am faster and stonger than I was in 1995 the last ime I raced. I was working 50-60 hours a week then and still putting in the miles. One could do worse than be a rider of the bicycle.

That's a lot of miles. How many days a week?

It is all make-work diversionary stuff to cover for a terrible presidential administration. I have to ride a lot of loops around this foolishness; it keeps me on my toes. But these days people intentionally walk around with their pants sagging below their butt, so I guess politics is following suit. |

OK, but the way he said it (vague, unspecific, and nebulous), allows us to think it's whatever administration we don't like... win-win!........................
CONGRATS to OP. :thumb: :thumb: |
Politics aside…. How many days a week are you riding? I’m 61 and have completed numerous centuries and couldn’t do that for too many consecutive days 😳😳😳😳

40 miles a day is a huge number at the end of the year.

From my personal standpoint I'd be happy doing 40 miles 3 or 4 times a week.

40 miles a day is a significant goal for most folks! Congrats on setting a goal, and for making it a challenge!
I tend to have a slightly OCD sort of mileage goal myself in the summer months. The goal is 1000 miles in a month, solely because it is a nice round number. Sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't. It does encourage me to stretch out some rides, as well as encouraging me to get in a long ride once a week. I ride 6 days a week, typically, so this ends up being very close to the OP's 40 mile/day goal. Steve in Peoria (lots of roads here, so no riding in loops) |
I try to ride @25/day 6 days/week. But sometimes the real world gets in the way. And no, that's not a political slur. Turning 74 this year.

Even if the OP was referencing an administration some 80 years ago, IMO it just didn't add anything germane to the improving on mileage which in and of itself is noteworthy and inspirational.

130 pounds? You better be a very short person for that weight to be healthy. And if you are a little person that is good, because short people live longer than taller people and have an easier time staying fit, the heart has less work to do, the short bones and light weight make the body more durable and wear less.
It is fun being big and tall when you are young but not when you get older. I have always managed to stay pretty slim, but whenever I have ridden a few hundred miles a week or more and got below 200 pounds people I knew started making comments about me looking 'gaunt", which is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as; Lean and haggard, especially because of illness, hunger or age. As long as your woman and you and your doctor like what you are up to great. |
A very very tremendous goal! Many people are telling me this is so incredible, just think, 50 miles, so incredible! The radical loser cyclists could never do such a thing, right? They just destroy our incredibly beautiful rides. So beautiful...but now sadly ruined.
The whole world is laughing at us, I heard from another leader, a very important man, maybe it was a woman, they do very well now too you know, and they told me how the whole world is laughing. So horrible. Fifty Miles! |

It is also questionable/debatable how noteworthy or inspirational gratuitous bragging about personal mileage stats is to anybody else, especially total strangers. How "big" the OP cares to go in "putting in the miles" seems germane to nothing.
Personally, I’m not buying any of it without “proof of life. |
Doing the same number of miles each day, whether it be 15 or 50, is a terrible training strategy.
|
Heck, I know a guy who rode 30,000 miles/year for a couple years. He worked up to it with 20k, 25k. Then he got tired of miles and climbed 1.5 million feet. Then he got divorced.

What event or objective do you think Fifty Plus (+) posters, especially those who are 75, like the OP and me, should be "training" for? It doesn't take much "training" to post stats if the strategy is to impress strangers who seem to be easily impressed.

You seem to be implying, if not specifying, that the OP has a "training strategy" and that it is terrible, and that he and other cyclists who "do the the same number of miles each day" have a terrible "training strategy" or are doing something wrong, or doing something that people with the correct "training strategy" wouldn't do.

I like to ride 50 miles each day when I get on the road bike which is normally most days that are decent to ride. I ride in the winter year around in Illinois but obviously snow, ice, and bitter winds keep me from riding outside some days. I just happen to like to get 50 or close. Today was 54 and I don't train for anything at all with the exception of it is generally fun and like donuts, ice cream, good beer, and pizza. The body can and does. adapt. over time but certainly not everyone has the physical make up to do that, and it helps that I am retired from my civil job. Despite what is high mileage I have not done a century in 5 years although it would not be hard at all just add some additional miles. I prefer to ride each day rather than go out and blow out 100 and find the next a struggle to move and fatigue.

Two years ago the OP claimed to be riding 50 miles/day.
