An apology for bumping a Zombie thread

Today I inadvertently bumped a thread that had been idle since 2018. I apologize. I didn't look. I really wasn't trying to contribute to the problem. In case it might be of any use, here is what happened:

I was in the middle of a boring meeting and had my laptop with me. I decided to log into bike forums. I logged in and was greeted with a page I don't normally see:

https://www.bikeforums.net/trending.php

It lists "trending" threads. The one I bumped had its last post in 2018. Again, I wasn't paying attention, but it does make me wonder if that happens frequently. "Trending" implies current. For some reason that thread got tagged.

Edit: Taking a closer look, all but the first 6 on that page are dated 2018. I wonder if there is a bug of some sort in the BB software?

Again, please accept my apologies for contributing to this on-going problem. I hope the above desciption might be of some utility.

Apology not accepted.

You've proven that you are just as fallible as the rest of us.

Welcome to the human race.

Well, having complained about this kind of thing before, I am rather embarrassed.

Barry2 10-19-22 01:28 PM

OK, but don't bug me about it.

You goofed, own it, hold your head high, but an internet apology.. unheard of !
Showing such a weakness with bring the internet haters down on all of your future posts.

:)

Well, I am hoping it provides some insight as to why this might be happening so frequently.

If so, my transgression and subsequent self-immolation will have been worth it.

I almost did the same today, but read your post and so I don't. So thank you!

My take on this is that "boring meetings" + "Laptop" causes Zombies.

I will no longer bring my Laptop to meetings.

Thanks for the pointer

It looks like pointing your browser to www.bikeforums.net now refers it to the problematic "trending" page, so I guess that is how I got lured in.

I started a thread on this

what I see on the "trending" page is mostly zombie threads. And some of them haven't been replied to in 5 years. I guess the IB programmers don't get out much

The problem is that the "trending" page is now where the main URL redirects to, so everyone now lands on this by default if they access the forum via the URL bikeforums.net

I didn't realize that when I started this thread.

When I opened Bikeforums and saw the new front page:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...db2bf6063a.gif

Maybe I'm just too old. :)

Edit:
Thank God it's a 302 redirect to the trending page.
But I can't find a way to avoid getting redirected there (i.e. to see the old starting page).

Forum posting is a damned if you do damned if you don't between a rock and a hard place that centers between "why did you start a new thread on this" and "why did you respond to this old thread".

Thanks - but I suppose there's no way to see a list of all the forum sections (as it used to be shown on the home page)?

People are weird about that. From a mod perspective, if there wasn't a batch of insulting and kvetching going on in a 5 year old thread I have no problem with someone resurrecting it. I'm not sure where my limit is, but unless it's a really quality thread if it's 7 years old a lot of the posters in it probably aren't here to defend themselves and we probably are going to close the thread. If there was a serious round of ankle-biting in a thread, 2 years old is past its best by date and it's probably going to be closed. We can always split off a new post into its own thread. The problem with having trending threads on the front page is that the worst threads attract the most activity.

There is a menu along the left of the new home page that lets you get into each section of the forum.

I know this is almost a Zombie thread now.

I have often suggested that old threads should not be bumpable except by the OP to give an update. But obviously that is not gonna happen.

Chuck M 10-29-23 04:56 AM

What if there was one day a year where it was customary or acceptable to raise zombie threads?

El día de los muertos. I approve.

But I don’t run this show so don’t hold your breath.

What's the big deal? Information is valid no matter when it was posted. Why start another identical thread? Having been administration in multiple discussion forums since the late 90s, I can tell you that the information on the forums is the most important resource. Adding to it in a positive way can only help future searchers. No need to apologize for anything, IMO, unless the new post has nothing to do with anything in the thread. Anyone who complains about old threads being resurfaced doesn't understand how forums are built or used.
