I'll likely either powder coat similar brown or maybe green. I need a new left side crank arm as mine is rusted. A forum member sent me a 48 tooth beautiful heron crank set but won't fit because teeth rub chain stay & left arm is longer than what's on mine. My crank arms are 165mm & curved vs angular.

Nobody told me there'd be math......

Strap a basket on the rear carrier and my Twenty becomes a "shopper"...

I own a 78 Raleigh Sports! Needs a bit of work, but for $35 bucks I can swallow some labor. I had a tire question...26 x 1 3/8 (as are common on Raleighs), are they the same as 650a?
Thanks! pictures coming

The BSD (bead seat diameter) is 590mm for both sizes so it should work.

nlerner 11-04-15 03:15 PM

26 x 1 3/8" = 590mm = 650A = EA3

See Tire Sizing Systems.

bmthom.gis 11-04-15 03:25 PM

Thank you, thank you both.

Yes, 650a is the European name for that same size. It has various names, chiefly 26x1-3/8. Lately, we call it 590 because that's precise. Just don't confuse it with the too-many other sizes also called 26". MTB tires have 559mm BSD, 650b is 584mm, 650c is 571mm. More info here. It's pretty crazy. There is also a Schwinn size called 26", also called 26x1-1/4. The BSD is 597.

Engineers say: The great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

You're right. We both got there. We win!

Haha thanks noglider.

Here it is! Lots of elbow grease (and bearing grease!) will be needed, as well as consumables. Already took off the tires, which were completely junked, took the chain off to soak in white vinegar overnight (really crusty, but I think salvageable), and put in an order for replacement grips, SA cable/housing, tires and tubes. The bike has been sitting out in the elements for awhile. I attacked the rims (inside and out) with steel wool and vinegar and that took most of the crustiness away. The Wald folding basket is one of my new favorite things!

I've been looking for a 23" frame Sports project bike for 3 years and you come up with one for 35 bucks. Congrats. Good find.

I've noticed, not on 20s but on the Sports models is that sometimes there's a flat hammered into the right chainstay for added clearance behind the chainwheel and sometimes there isn't. I think this was done at the factory because the paint is undisturbed. A fudge factor sort of thing. Anyway, setting the chainstay against an anvil and hammering it a bit flatter seems to be one way to keep the chainwheel from rubbing on the frame.
Have you decided on a color yet?

Where are you? There are several on our local CL beginning at $75 and going up. Go to CL, pick Virginia, then Richmond and search on Raleigh. You'll get results for local up to D.C. and to Tidewater.

They don't come up much around here. Missed out on a Tourist with rod brakes.

Don't know if this has ever been posted before.
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning,
British film, 1960.
Albert Finney works at the Raleigh factory
and the film was shot there.

BigChief, there's a couple 23" Sports that have been listed on Boston's CL for some time, both at reasonable prices:

1973 Raleigh Sports 3 speed 23" frame

FS: RALEIGH Sports 23" Men's City Bike

The first is far from where I live, but the second is fairly close if you're looking for a facilitator. Let me know.

I'd jump on either of those bikes, both have added value. One has a pump and the other a leather saddle.

NormanF 11-04-15 10:32 PM

I wouldn't upgrade the old style pipe straight seatpost. You can easily change saddles.

I've had to get one to install a double rail saddle on a bike with a modern micro adjust seatpost that can accept only single rail saddles.

noglider 11-05-15 06:16 AM

bmthom.gis, don't de-rust that chain. Just buy a new one. 1/8" chains are cheap and last a lifetime.

Breeze & Angel made a nifty 4-wire adaptor that lets you mount such a saddle on a microadjust seatpost. I used one to install a Brooks on my RB-T. There must be someone making a piece like this relic from the '80s. I have a spare but am keeping it. Pics soon.

Thanks, I appreciate that. But before I take on another project, I have to test my waterslide decals. rhm has a brilliant technique that I'm going to try.
