I built this up a couple of years back and tried it out on a frame that was hanging in the basement. Worked fine, but ended up selling off that frame. Sale includes a set of Panaracer Col de la via 650b x 38mm tires with lots of life left. Hub hardware is complete, and I’ll also throw in a Sturmey Archer 3-speed trigger shifter. Price is $75 shipped in the CONUS.

I built this up for a 1951 Raleigh Clubman as the original Dunlop rim was kind of square. The AM is a fun hub; the three speeds are fast, faster, and fastest! Hub is complete, including rare two-piece indicator, and I’ll include a trigger shifter. Price is $100 shipped in the CONUS.

I bought this Indian-made hub from Soma when it came out last year, and built the wheel up last winter. Unfortunately I can’t get the hub to shift gears, no matter how much I kick back. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong. So this is a new hub, new rim, new spokes, but it’ll take some problem solving to make it work. Price is $50 shipped in the CONUS.

I have lots of other Sturmey Archer drivetrain bits if there’s a need. Let me know.

Now, if you had a 650B front I’d give thought to throwing them on the Ted Williams instead of going derailleur…

115mm or standard Sturmey Archer hub dimensions. Axles are long enough to make that work on a 120mm spaced frame, but 130mm would be pushing it.

I was running Ted with a 2-speed SRAM auto-shifting hub. The Splendid Splinter thought it was a fine idea!

Didn't that bike come with 27 inch wheels originally? I'll bet there's lots of clearance there for a 3 speed rear 27 inch wheel . . .

Just sayin if you want a bombproof set up, 3 speeds are hard to beat.

I hate seeing for sale threads like this. I keep thinking all I need to do is to find a 650b front wheel and then I can do something really cool with a 120 OLD road frame . . .

Neal, the 1951 AM 27" might be of interest to me. It sounds like perfect gearing for riding here on a pancake-flat coastal island. But let me check to see what I have in spare 27" front wheels prior to committing to a purchase. Is the rim hookless? I'm guessing so and this wouldn't be a deterrent.

Bob, it actually has a hooked bead, so likely not from the early 1950s! I do have another BF-er keen to buy it, but you expressed interest first, so let me know what you decide.

For anyone that is on the fence, Neal is a good seller and knows how to ship. I think that over the years, I have bought at least two framesets (PX10 and RB-T) and at least one set of SA wheels from him. If any of these were 4-speed, I don't think I could have resisted.

nlerner , if you find any spare 4-speed indicator chains and/or shifters, please let me know. I might also consider hubs.

Great name! Who’s the owner?

I used a 1966 Sports as my commuter for a few years but at 6’ 3” it was kinda cramped. Now I’m have a Sturmey 8-speed with 700c rims on a 62 cm Raleigh International frame and it’s the cat’s spats.

The setup I’m thinking about will be for one of my sons. I gave him a Bikes Direct Dawes singlespeed yaers ago to get around the city and he’s decided that having more than one gear could be useful, especially when he crosses the East River to see friends in Brooklyn. He wasn’t thrilled by a 1969 Philips I have so IHG may not be the way despite the benefits.

Looked it up, I see it was the man. I’m not a sports guy…

Great piece, thanks for sharing it. I don’t know if contemporary sports journalism approaches the level of Updike. It made me think of my dad who was a sports guy; in his 50s he returned to college to finish the journalism degree he gave up when his GI Bill funding ran out and he joined the work force. I pulled up and reviewed a work of his entitled: Journalists as Literary Artists. Good way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Thanks, Matt! One wheel I'm not quite ready to sell is an FM hub laced to a brown-anodized 700c rim. A friend of mine rehabbed the hub after it went wacky on me at one point, and I really haven't given it a full trial since, but plan to at some point. The FM is a very nice hub though my favorite 4-speed is probably the FW. Nice range of gears.

I would like to buy the 2 speed, and if you have a matching front wheel and / or rim, please let me know.

Hmm, let me check on that. I actually did build up a front wheel at the same time to match (not exactly the same rim profile but close), but I'm not quite sure where that is! I'll look around.

Bummer I missed out on the AM wheel. maybe next time.
