Thanks. It's the one Raleigh originally specced, at least for the first couple of decades of production on this model, although it's impossible to get the matching bag. The one brooks makes now is nothing like it.

I don't think I'll ride it again until I get a longer seatpost. With the lepper the original one was fine, but a B66 is just too low. Interestingly the instructions that came with the saddle say the correct height is when you can put both feet on the ground and the bottom of your pedal stroke still has 30 degrees in the knee. Absolutely insane. I rode it like this for three minutes and my knees have been screaming in pain for fourteen hours. I don't know what brooks were thinking, but I know I regret it.

2. A friend who's into vintage cameras gave me the roll of film, and used the caffenol method for developing it at his place. This picture is just a color-inverted "scan" of the negative done by using an old laptop screen to backlight it and using a digital camera to take a picture of that. He's had good results doing the same thing with negs from his Rollei TLR that uses the same film.

The All British Cycling Event happens next weekend, so I tuned-up my Super Course roadster conversion and took it out for short ride around the `hood at sunset.

Rolling through Thompson Park, I came upon two big whitetail bucks standing in this field, but I couldn't get the camera into action fast enough. They just sauntered into the woods in the background of this shot, and disappeared. So I shot the bike instead:

The bike is definitely ready. As for the rider, it's been almost a month since my big crash, and I think I'm ready to tackle the 30-mile Gentleman's Tour next weekend. I'll make sure to take a lot of photos to post here.

God that is a beautiful bike. Its bikes like this that make me scour craigslist and offer up for hours looking for a bike to start a new project with. Is that a gold chain? And what kind of handlbars do you have on that beauty? (I'm sure you've been asked these questions before haha)

I'm sure it's a kit boat, unknown make.
Probably late 50's early 60's.
Plywood hull with a mahogany transom and a cedar deck.

I already asked in the ISO thread but I wanted to ask here since it's the kind if part I imagine you gents have laying around.
Does anybody have eithier a 700c or 27" tire with the hub housing built in? I dont need the internals just the hub case tied into the wheel. I'm looking to plug my 4 speed FW into an already built AW 3 speed wheel.
My LBS has a fully built 700c for $60 but I'm looking for a cheaper route (as always).

Thanks, Buellster. This bike existed in my head for a couple years before I could make it a reality. I think that is the key to a successful project - knowing exactly what you want for each component ahead of time. It helps to have a sketch to work from. I learned that from watching hot-rod builder programs on TV.

Yes, that is a KMC gold chain. Perfectly adequate for this application, and it adds one more visual detail that might get missed otherwise. The handlebar is a Velo Orange Milan.

I'm on the fence right now about adding a chainguard. This is, after all, a lightweight roadster. The kind of chainguard I would use has the mounting bracket secured by the bottom bracket. As such, it would move the chain-line outboard by a couple mm's. So I would have to put a spacer behind the rear cog to compensate. I'm leaving it the way it is for now. We'll see what I decide this winter, when the cold weather drives me into the shop for the evenings.

I've found that's an incredibly important part of planning a build, having each piece thought out. You saw how well the seat of my pants approach worked with my Harding haha
Now that I have a daily rider I feel I can really take my time and be patient and methodical with my plans.
In the short term to get a feel for it I will likley plug the 4 speed into my sports (big chief had mentioned that may be possible and sheldons site confirms that a 3 speed aw hub case is identical to a 4).
I am however always keeping an eye for the forever home that the 4 speed will end up in. I want it to be a 531 or similar frame. The search is a big part of the fun.

The chain is great. It's one of those touches that makes the bike feel well thought out and just look well done.
VO makes such lovely bars for vintage projects. I have a set of crazy bars and a set of porterur bars. The crazy bars are silly but I like them and the ports have an old cruiser feel.

be sure to let us know! I imagine whatever you decide to do will look good given the project so far. I can't see the eye for detail that built this beauty up leading you astray.

So the seller dropped the price to $20 for the two, and I couldn't resist. I picked them up this morning. The men's 21" coffee Sports is in quite decent shape with some oxidation here and there. The lady's bike is a pretty rusty thing though the handlebars and stem have good chrome and the wheels are nice and true (and the tires are holding their air). I'll likely swap the wheels (rear hub dated 1971) and any other chrome parts that are in better shape on to the men's bike and sell that one off fairly quickly.

The seller was a junk dealer of some sort in Weymouth, MA, and left the bikes out in the back of his store with instructions to take 'em away and leave $20 in his mailbox. So that's what I did.

That's a killer deal at 20 bucks. I just spent almost that much for a front hub. Although it is a 32H Bayliss Wiley that I've been searching for. Even after the wheel swap you'll still have plenty of good parts left over on the stepthrough. Funny little things that tend to wear out like the lower fork race are hard to come by.

Thanks! I actually have a spare rear S-A 3-speed rear wheel that I trash picked last year. I'll need to scour the trash or build a front wheel to outfit the lady's frame and then likely give it away to a co-worker (it'll be an excellent low-profile Boston-area commuter).

Just happened across this: https://boston.craigslist.org/nos/bi...688503667.htmlVintage 1930's Raleigh 3-speed woman's bike. It has a brooks B73 saddle and rod operated drum brakes, front and rear. The hub is a Sturmey Archer KN4 and the shifter is a Sturmey Archer Model K. It has 28x1 1/2 tires, a fully enclosed chain guard, and even a flip down kickstand along the downtube. The bike is in excellent condition for its age and is rideable! Please refer to the pictures for the condition. It does have some pitting on the chrome, and some light surface rust on parts of the painted surfaces. The pin striping on the front wheel has been mostly scraped away, and the rear has some chipping.

I'm just saying that you can try to replicate a roadster but there's something about the ride of the originals that I've yet to find in a repro. Linus are nice modern utilitarian bikes, yet they are nothing like the DL just above. Different steel, ride, weight, angles, mojo. Each are worth owning for their own merits, like all bikes.

Jeez, the ad is still up and it now says $35. Jeez. Wonder if the dynohub works. Looks pretty straight and complete. Saddle might need a bit of work, though.

30 now. dang. It is hard to see in these pictures, but the rims look good. The frame looks pretty good. Looks like rust is working it's way through the front mudguard. There's not really anything to go wrong in a dynohub unless somebody took it apart and wrecked it. Sure the Brooks is shot, but for 30 bucks, it's a steal. I couldn't resist this one if it was close by.
