I was merely pointing out that when I find a Raleigh it's usually an oddball. I wanted a rod brake roadster to ride and ended up finding a chrome Boss Bike with balloon tyres. I tried again and found a Dawn. It ended up being a wartime bike with blackout parts and war grade tyres, I wanted a plain ladies Raleigh and found a nice Dutch loop-frame Cameo with a lot of extras. I wanted a Twenty and found a blue one with drum brakes. I found a ladies Sports in the trash and it was a Malaysian made bike. I wanted a Chopper and found a 1969 tall frame 3+2 that has all kinds of rare, one year-only parts. I wanted a Sports in a color other than green, brown, or black and found the grey Canadian one. I do have a couple of "normal" Superbes and DL-1's but I seem to attract the unusual bikes. I don't really go out of my way to look for them but they find me and I've grown quite fond of the ones I have. I'm actually a Schwinn collector and never found anything other than the more common stuff. (I have a couple unusual color Schwinns but that's it.) Heck, I don't even think we had any Raleigh dealers anywhere near here. |

Just a classic case of always finding stuff when you're not looking for it. When I'm looking for Apple Krates and Paramounts, these things show up. I'll never admit to being a British bike collector because if I do then the well will dry up... ;) |

Beautiful chrome! Is that one of those hybrid gearing conversion kits?
I spotted a pair of DL-1s on CL, but I can't get a response from the seller. This is the second time posted, the first time was perhaps a month ago, same thing, I emailed and no response. Anyone ever had something like this happen? Any hints? If I can't get through due to spam filter or something, maybe I can at least play matchmaker in case folks here may not have seen this. Nice Saddle
I like that saddle on that bike. Does anyone know if those came with leather saddles or just always white vinyl? I found one with the latter in a scrap bin and am having a hard time with the thought of changing out the original, superior (and sympathetic) though a B72 may be.

Raleigh Sports and Superbe came with leather seats and Raleigh pattern rims; cheaper ones, including all the non-Raleigh badged ones, did not. If a bike has plain Dunlop Endrick rims, it probably came with a mattress saddle.
No doubt someone will point out exceptions to the rule. They exist. I can think of at least one myself. But I'm not changing what I said. |

What about the difference between S22, DL22 and DL24... something about Sports, Deluxe, Superbe that I read about on a thread from nlerner or cudak888? Were all Sports offered in all three options, and what changed between them? I read something there too about high-volume dealers having access to the chrome ones. (By the way, is this an OK thread for questions of history and provenance? Or more just appreciation?) The one I speak of is in too sad a shape to post pics at the moment especially so soon after these nice shots. The chrome is badly pitted and will be evermore. But it's still better as a bike than an ingot... |

Would anyone know where I can find a set of nuts and bolts that attaches the rear fender and rear rack to the frame? It's goes right behind the rear dropout. This is for an old 72' Raleigh Sports. Thanks. |

Thanks. Stainless would be the nicest way to go and nuts and bolts keep the original look... using a lock nut will ensure that they stay secure no matter how rough the roads get. |

Can you help me identify this Raleigh? A friend of mine is thinking about selling it and as you know, I'm looking to buy a 3-speed. Never saw this color though, is this a "Sport"? He believes it is a '69 / '70 model year.

The model name should be on the chain guard, so a photo from the other side would confirm it.
