****ty weather build.
Aiight, so Im in the PNW, it rains, and I'm sick of driving my car everywhere so I've decided to build up a beefy fixed winter commuter that can handle fatty tires. I may even do some loaded touring on it once the sun starts showing itself, but thats a long time from now. I've more or less got the parts list down but I want your guy's input on some stuff. I just want everything to be "bombproof" or as close as I can get within my budget, which is roughly $800-$1000. Here's what I've got so far:
Frame/Fork: BikeIsland Motobecane Jury Stem: Thomson Elite Bars: Nitto Noodle Crank: Silver Omniums? IRD Defiants? 170mm(I'm a gangly mofugga) Chainring: Whatever comes with the omniomnoms, I think 47t 1/8"? Pedals: SPD's Wheels: Velocity Synergy's? Mavic Open Pro's? to Phil Track Hubs (Tied and soldered???) (From velomine?) Cog: Surly 17t 1/8" Seatpost: Thomson Elite? Miche Supertype? (I think they look cool :/) Saddle: Selle Anatomica Titanico X? Brooks Team Pro? Fenders: Velo Orange 50mm Smooth Rack: Tubus Tell me what you guys think, and I'm not trying to build a "tracklocross" bike here, just a fun, reliable fixed commuter/tourer. (That I may or may not take on some gravel roads and trails now and again...) |
Kinda off topic but the Civ LRLV is on a hell of a sale right now. SSCX would make a great commuter.

The civilian is sick, and a killer deal, but its not really what I'm looking for. And yes, The Kilo WT would solve all my problems! but its gone, at least in my size. I have no idea if BikesDirect is planning on getting them in stock again...

Well, It won't only be a "****ty weather beater". That was a bad choice of words on my part, I'm going to use this bike everyday, for everything, and I don't really want something that will let me down or look bad, that is why I am opting for some nicer parts. Ok so the omniums and phil hubs might be a little over the top, and maybe I could do a kalin seatpost... But like I said, I want this thing to be a rock, so there are some parts, like the wheels and saddle, that I don't really want to make any compromises on.

Any seatpost/stem will hold your seat/bars as well as a Thomson will. Any crank will turn your chain as well as Omniums will. Any sealed bearing hub will last as long as a Phil and almost any good rim on a well-built wheel will last as long as anything from Velocity. Don't confuse performance/vanity with utility.

Point taken... What other parts would you suggest?

For the seatpost you can go for one by kalloy, for a crankset you can go for andels, for the wheelset you can go with the open pros laced to formula that you can find on velomine. All of this won't break the bank or your heart when mother nature takes her toll.
As for your saddle, leather suspension saddles are not going to be your friend either once they get wet and ridden on, go for something synthetic/ low maintenance. |

got my Nature Boy from Bikeman.com complete for $850 (green 58's still on sale). been a great all-round-all-weather bike. closing in on 270 commuting days with it this year, as well as most of my recreational riding.
that said, i saw a Fantom Cross Uno in person two months ago and was pleasantly surprised for the price. only thing the owner had done was (as mentioned above) put Open Pro/Formula wheels on it and Kool Stop brakepads. i'd ride it and just replace anything that wears out with something a little better. |
I didn't do the math, but can you really get all the stuff in the OP for a grand?

The Kilo WT is rad and you could use the rest of your budget to put on some fenders, lights, and racks to make it a great allweather errand runner. Something you can lock up and not worry about thomson elite, omnium, brooks, and phil swag getting stolen. |

(so tempting and they have my size ANd the right color!) And a little heads up, if you want to ride it fixed, Surly sells a fixed/disc hub, and the rims that come on the Civ are Jalco DM23's if you wanted it to match. Just get it, trust me. |
That would end up being a cross-breed between my Cross Check and my Fuji Track Comp. I don't think I could justify the cost to myself.

Alright, I've done some pretty serious revising.
Forgot about the omniums, but I still want defiants... Formula's laced to open pros it is. Very valid Point on the saddle, I've got a couple spares kicking around that I could use. I already have the thomson stem, so I'll probably be using it, and I'll just use a kalloy seatpost. |
