Early 80's Pinarello
A Vancouver LBS is selling this gold-plated (chromed?) and pink Pinerello from the early 80's for $2,250 Canadian.

Modolo Kronos Brakes: Represents one of the most striking takes on how a bicycle brake should work and look. Working on a similar principle as Campagnolo Delta brakes, the Kronos were slightly simpler, much lighter and indeed darker. In the year of 1983 two events took place - the Star Wars episode "Return of the Jedi" hit the screens and Modolo Kronos were introduced to the public. And if Darth Vader had a bicycle, no others then these would have been slowing him down. The standout model from the Modolo prototype division was the Modolo Kronos braking system, a pure prototype, created solely for the advancement of research into materials, design, functionality and performance. For this reason only 3,000 units were produced. Some say the Kronos, limited edition, lightweight aero TT brake was a failure. Roberto Visentini won the last stage of the 1983 Tirreno Adriatico, for G.S Inoxpran using Kronos levers and calipers. In reality the Kronos probably doesn't deserve the reputation as a Modolo failure. Modolo stated at the time that "The Kronos is an experimental brake series, with a limited production for the purpose of promoting new lines and solving problems. Kronos is in fact a … prototype". Kronos brakes were specifically designed for time trial racing, the key experimental concepts being aerodynamics and weight. Seems seriously overpriced. Also, cant' tell for sure but those look to be sewup wheels/tires. If that's not what you're looking for, you'd also need to buy another wheelset.

That is a beautiful bike. And, I like the Super Record groupset. I see some loss of anodizing on the rear rim as is not uncommon.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with Pinarello to know all the details to look for. Pinarello was one of the brands that made cromovelato frames. Very beautiful, but perhaps prone to having finish problems. I wonder if this was one of those frames and has been repainted. $2250 CAD = about $1650 USD. A little high, but perhaps not too far out of the ballpark. Looking on E-Bay, most of the Pinarellos are a little cheaper, but they definitely need some polishing and work. Ultimately, are you happy with the color and the size of the bike? Sewups? |
Looks like that same dealer has the same bike (different Modolo brakes) but a smaller size. I wonder if this set belonged to a couple? Odd to see two with this weird color combination.

The frame details, internal cabling, front derailleur, point towards 1986-87. Pristine decals, is this a repaint? Early '80s would have nut mounted brakes with over bb shift cables, with the decals chipping away.

The smaller frame looks like a standard Montello but with gold plating. The larger frame is different, as it has internal gear cable routing, like Prestige S. Maybe a custom Montello? Both are no older than 1985 models, based on the 84 Olympic palmares and SLX decals. However, one always has to question such pristine looking Pinarello decals. The prices' don't seem unfair to me, given the gold plating and Vancouver market. I suspect they may settle for $2000 CDN.

I've known the seller for 30 years, he's got a shop and a huge private stash of both road and mountain goodies. And yes, prices around here are pretty stupid compared to most parts of the CONUS.

Other than the resale values to Kronos fan colllectors, not sure if Kronos brakes are really a good thing on a C&V bike.
The Kronos brakes get too much hype as I heard that they don't brake that well like most other Delta type designed brakesets from the 80's..... Never mind the problem of getting replacement parts for it like the lever and caliper hoods that tend to dry rot really badly. And like the rest of the braieset, people tend to ask exorbitant prices for them...... |

If after 30 yes the owner buyers have passed somethings not right so I would pass unless you get a great deal $100 maybe worth $1000 on a good day if all is right but
IMHO leave that to the next guy. |
That is a really nice bike, based on what I see in the pictures. If I were buying the bike, I might be tempted to go as high as $1,400.00 CND. If I were selling, I would hope to get $2,000.00 CND. So, if you really want it to keep, be prepared to pay a fair price of close to but no more than $2000.00, assuming it is in really really good shape. If you are not sure about keeping it, then two grand is way too high. I sold this one, a year or two ago, for $500.00 CND and felt pretty good about it...

Seems way over priced. I have purchased 4 Pinarello bikes (2 Montello and 2 Record). The most expensive one was $450.
