Moving Up to Ten Speed(with a Cino Tie In)

The Cino post yesterday was timely. As I just received a care package from Thomas's friend whom we met through Cino two years ago. Some here might remember the Zeus that was auctioned at Cino 2021. My son won the auction and brought the bike home.

Here's a link to that thread:

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...cino-zeus.html

Moving forward, we have kept in touch with the original owner(Mark), keeping him updated on the adventures of his old bike. So fast forward to a couple of months back. Mark emails asking if we would be interested in some Campagnolo 10 speed stuff. Well of course I said "sure, and how much do you want for it?"

Shipping cost.

Winning that Zeus auction has been a great thing for Thomas and I. Mark has been very very generous with this, and several other things associated with the Zeus. He has upgraded his current bike to 12 speed, and just wanted to move the old parts along.

More to come..

...and what's the story on the Lyon?

ollo_ollo 03-18-23 04:43 PM

10 speed indeed! Nice.

Roger M 03-18-23 08:24 PM

Yeah, as soon as the box landed on the dining room table, I could see the wheels spinning in Thomas's head. He's thinkin "I need a frame so I can build another bike "...

Yeah, no. We already have a pretty nice ten speed Campagnolo equipped bike for him(to grow into in the next 6-12 months). So, I need a new project...

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d5bb81edfe.jpg
At this point, I don't have a better option than this Jeff Lyon. It's already a good 8/9 speed bike, but I don't have a 10 speed integrated shifter bike at the moment. I am still pondering.

Roger M 04-07-23 02:57 PM

It's been slow going on this assignment. I finally got around to removing all of the Shimano parts(I'll probably come to realize that it's not really an upgrade, but a chance to run integrated brake/shifting, and a couple more gears).

I have ran into a few hiccups along the way...

The bottom brackets are Italian. Somewhere here in my disorganized parts bins, I have a 10 speed English threaded square taper bb. I just need to remember where I put it.

There wasn't a front derailleur with this group. I have a 10 speed Veloce derailleur, but it's a 35mm clamp. Ebay seems to have some optimistic pricing on Record/Chorus fds. Also, the recessed nut was missing for the rear brake and the front nut is too long(probably for a carbon fork). The existing Dura Ace brakes had Problem Solver nuts(for fender mount options), so I am using those with the Record brakes.

Anyhow, that's where I'm at. I'll update as I get over these few bumps.

After a frustrating search through the basement and garage, the English threaded square taper bb finally appeared. I was a bit hopeful that I could swap the threaded cups over to the Record piece, but they aren't a fit. So, I am using a Chorus bottom bracket. Fwiw, I weighed both, and the Chorus part is about 20 grams heavier than Record.

A front derailleur is still on the radar, but I have a place holder that looks like will work for the time being..

So that's where I'm at tonight. More to follow tomorrow..

Seriously jelly. That aluminum Record crank is the nicest looking crank Campy ever made IMNSHO.

That car's been sitting there on the bottom for ten years, and we still haven't figured out the make/model/year...

@roger_m - the build on the De Rosa was with a 10speed set driven by the finding of a wheel set with a 10 speed cassette. My front brake had too long a "nut" too. Found one online the right size.

Shame on my dominant C&V stable but I really love riding the De Rosa with 10 speed Record. Yes, one of the best-looking cranks out there.

That 10 speed Record looks good, and fits your De Rosa well. The red pulleys are a nice touch. Bullseye? Yeah, I've had my eye out for a nice Record/Chorus hubset laced to some box section rims, but not finding anything yet(other than some optimistically priced ebay stuff).

For now, I am 'borrowing' a set of Campagnolo Neucleon wheels from a bike that belongs to my son...

Little update. Wheels mounted and cables adjusted. Will try to test ride Tomorrow afternoon if the rain let's up..

I put a a chain on it and ran it through the gears last night. For a forty somethin year old front derailleur, it seems to pair up with the ergo shifter just fine. It's most probably not as efficient as the 10 speed counterpart, but it'll work until I can source a 28.6 10 speed part. The rear brake shoes are dropped all the way in the slots(unless I move the wheel back in the dropouts).

I would like to put some miles on it before tape, but the weather says no for a few more days..

Here's where I'm at..

The weather has kept me from any test ride, but the few days look dry. I will get a ride in before weeks end.

So here it is. Only things let to finish are cut cables and cap the ends, a minor saddle adjustment, and install new dropout screws when they arrive. I've had the saddle and tape for a couple of years, so I thought I'd give em a shot. I will note, that I'll never buy this Brooks microfiber tape again. Too thick and too much of a pain in the as to put on(especially with integrated shifters).

Im undecided on the brown with red here, but ive seen plenty of red cars with brown leather interior that looked great..

Thanks for pointing the bling maker. I had thought Bullseye too. A local roadie had an early Klein with red Bullseye pulleys on his Super Record R.D. Also we had an LBS with a BMX track in the back yard, and Bullseye were big in that area.
