Thw paint took a lot of touching up and it's no show stopper but with a new clear coat and some shiny bliing , not too bad.

Looks like it cleaned up nicely. That style of frame is sometimes used by guys who build up 26 inch wheel "muscle bikes" because the originals on the small wheels are too small for an adult. That frame size is good for a smaller adult as well. Color looks good on that bike.

Lots of daylight today to go for a ride after work. We've had some trouble getting truly good weather for rides here lately. It has been kind of cool, damp, and sometimes smoky (the wildfires in Quebec were sending smoke down this way for a week or so). But tonight was great - 1941 Schwinn New World 3 speed.

This one has a kind of unusual art deco "planes and trains" badge.

A pre-rationing wartime bike is something you don't see every day.

Beautiful bike, Sir Mike. Thanks for posting.

A cousin spotted this at a tag sale and texted to ask if I was interested. For $10 I couldn't say no! I believe I see a twist shifter, no chainguard and some very creatiuve fulcrum placement. Beyond that, I am scratching my head over the date (68 latest?) and lower-end fender stays, rims and saddle, not to mention that it's unusual to see this color (colour? colorway??) so anyone with deeper knowledge than mine, please chime in. I'll have it in a bit more than a week, until then this is all I have to go on.

ascherer, '64 - '66 was the typical timeframe for the twist grip. Pretty clean for a sawbuck!

The women's cables were a longer length, hence the messy fulcrum.

I've certainly paid way more for much crustier examples! I wondered if the shifter had been moved from one of the compacts like the Shopper or Twenty and that's why the cable was so short.

clubman 06-26-23 01:33 PM

I could see that. Twist grips looked cool so someone could have made that choice, not realizing that they just didn't work well for long.

Well the hub is an English 3 speed anyway...

A 1956 Schwinn Racer I picked up last year. I was searching for a '62 but this had cooler graphics and head badge so it came home with me. I didn't do a restoration obvivouly, just cleaned it up and gave it some TLC. Judging by the date code on the rear hub it was late '56 so maybe sold in '57. Or a Christmas bike? Who knows.

The "temporary" seat is too high in those photos but even so the frame is too small for me. I found a '62 frame in the next size up so I'll probably be putting another one together at some point.

I very much appreciate SirMike’s ride photos, and the attention to detail on his bikes. It is to Smokey here for me to do a ride today.

On another note, this hobby takes you to strange places. eBay showed me a 1934 KB hub. I thought, oh, it has the indicator, so I bid.
I now have a hub, with no bike to fit it to, and no real prospects of finding one, or having room for if I did find one.

The plus side is it appears to work, brakes, and three gears, and I have a spare indicator for my 37 Raleigh Utility roadster.

My wife saw me open this and she said ohh you can buy that for me if you like.
I said its all the way in Cleveland, she goes, and?

Took my Schwinn Traveler out for a little while this afternoon. The weather is good today, but the Canadian wildfire smoke is starting to filter back down here again.

This is much less rusty than an identical one at a junk shop near me, and it's cheaper. $60 in MD.

Road trip.

There's a similar one here in the Twin Cities. Slightly cheaper, but still expensive:

Just let my '69 Sports go to someone who needed basic transportation. I think I'm going to continue this practice. Buy up inexpensive 3 speeds for sale locally, ride 'em awhile and give them to someone who needs reliable transportation. Would love to see more of these great bikes out on the road being used.

That's beautiful. I give bikes away now and then. It's fun when you see them being used.

Nice bike, I've got a few Schwinns here myself, one a blue '56 Traveler in 23", a black '62 Traveler in a 24" frame, a red '65 Racer in 22", and one campus green '72 Speedster in with a 24": frame. The two Travelers are apart, both were in bad need of fenders, and the Traveler had damaged threads on its fork. I just found two pairs of new old fenders and a fork. The 56 still has an original pair of US Royal tires on it. I found it while traveling through AZ about 30 years ago, I bought it and carried it around for two weeks in the back of the RV.
I tend to go back and forth between my Schwinn bikes and my English bikes. The Schwinns have been on the back burner for a few years, but now that I've found fenders, they'll get pushed to the front of the line soon.

Yeah, and we gotta spread the gospel on how ideal these bikes are for short, flat commutes. They're perfect for getting around the city. Feel like people may have forgotten or haven't been hipped.

ascherer, you will want to replace the twist shift. It’s pretty bad. I had one on my 1967 Hercules.

thumpism, $250 is dirt cheap for a tourist here in NYC. A Sports in good condition is $400-500. A Tourist is more.

An excellent Sports here in Ontario might grab $300, most go for $100-$150. I sold a very nice Tourist for just over $400 last year. Guess we need to get these bikes to NYC! Sold this 71 Robin Hood Dropbar for just over $300 this spring. It was sold with a B17, I kept the B67 for my 72 Raleigh Sports.

How far of a ride did you take? Did the Lenton Sports handle the hills (if any) well?

The bike is beautiful. Do you have any information on the clamp-on water bottle cage? It made me wonder what the first examples available in the U.S. were. Mansfield? T.A?

15 miles or so, pretty much all hills around here. The Lenton has a 22 tooth rear cog and handles hills pretty well.
