Comic Frame

Any thoughts on this bizarre comic covered frameset? I'm mostly interested to know if there is a precedent for this kind of thing, or any known history of the art form.

It came out of a collection of lots of off-beat bike stuff. Click here for the photo album.

I like it. :thumb:

Having been a resident in SanJose/LosGatos/SantaCruz from the 70s thru the 00s and a regular visitor to SF & Oakland - i've seen bikes covered in just about everything!

Kitchen shelf liner to Mickey Mouse & Co stickers to Music themed Grateful Dead (Truckin, down to NO) to camo to space themed to just colorful and weird. And of course = naked+rusty looking paint

Several on Seattle CL bragging about paint - coral snake tubes, my artistic friend's Work of Love, professionally painted and illustrated, etc.

edit: A high school friend does high end paint on motorcycles & auto stuff. He did a SuperHero helmet for a motorcyclist (no pic, :(). Here’s one example. Not sure Andy’s ever done a bicycle.

Dr Deltron (is that right?) used to show some exquisite weird paint.
Pegoretti comes to mind, as well as LandShark.

Saw a lot of this during the "fixed-gear craze" in the earlier part of the 21 century.

Thought it was sticker bombed at first glance.

Looks like something Dario might do.

Neat job cutting around the lugs.

I like it.

video

Ive seen some videos on youtube of guys taking poor condition frames and covering them with skateboard stickers instead of painting them and getting positive response ....they are very proud of them.........some actually turned out pretty cool

gaucho777 02-17-21 12:11 AM

I like it, too! I've seen a couple of others, but not executed as well as that frame. Looks like someone took their time with the placing/layout and trimming.

SoccerBallXan 02-17-21 03:16 AM

Reminds me of some funky Landshark paint jobs.

That is crazy!
How was that applied?

Bianchigirll 02-17-21 05:47 AM

Any idea how it was applied? Is it just decoupage? I e thinking about doing something similar to my Ugly Betty but maybe with old road maps

thumpism 02-17-21 08:01 AM

I thought the OP had misspelled Romic.

SurferRosa 02-17-21 08:30 AM

I like how the comics have that vintage aesthetic from the '40s and '50s.

francophile 02-17-21 09:02 AM

I've seen this done with beer stickers and skate stickers before, never comics. I actually like it.

Frame is a Miyata piece? Lots of Asia vibes to it, and the spoon stay ends sorta gave me that vibe. Looks like the paint under was in great shape. Gorgeous color.

I've always wanted a barnicle bike... Just the thought of having a growing bike intrigues me, this is not my bike.

I do have some plans for a growing bike though

Oof. It's a cool idea, but barnacles are sharp as hell. That bike would cheese-grate you if you crashed. Ignoring the corrosion aspect of things totally :D

Poor moto...

Rage 02-17-21 09:37 AM

Maybe a moss or chia pet bike?

Fancy, but not romically painted.

I was commissioned to create a chair along these exact same lines several years ago. And I've recently been commissioned to do something similar to a bike frame, although I think the drawings will wind up being black and white line work only.

Velikus 02-17-21 06:02 PM

I'm planning to do this exact thing to one of my bikes using Mod Podge and images of old horror comics. Interesting and fun.

Russ Roth 02-17-21 10:36 PM

I'd guess some sort of wrap and well installed. wish I had a bike to do that with.

Rage 02-17-21 10:59 PM

I’ve got a couple bikes to do it with but am wondering how best to go about it.

Heck, if I leave a bike outside long enough (about a week), it'll be covered in three kinds of lichen and maybe moss, definitely rust.

Rage 02-18-21 06:22 AM

Oofah! S’why you don’t do that. Bring that poor bike inside...

Gartenmeister 02-18-21 10:17 AM

OP here.

I am not exactly sure how the comics were applied, glued on and then coated it seems.

The frame is just some low-end 27" POS. Not really sure what to do with it, as it seems that building it might somehow detract. One needs to be pretty close to appreciate the detail.

I have this other frame out of the same collection. Might be the same artist? I like it better.
