Bike Index and Project 529. Can’t hurt.

Registered mine the day I got it even though it's always indoors when not ridden and I don't ever get more than a few feet aways from it when I am out on the road.

Yes, I've registered both my bikes on bikeindex.com as well as wrote the serial numbers down and kept them in a safe place.

As well, did you register your bike with the manufacturer you bought it from? Sometimes the local PD or Sheriff's office also has a registration for bikes too. The national registries are more obscure to others than you might think. So don't depend on just one if you are concerned about bike theft.

Thought about it numerous times, but never have, but I do keep the serial number and pictures on file...just in case.

All my bikes (Moser and Manufrance have no serial number) are registered at Project 529.

I registered the MTB I bought new with the manufacturer for warranty purposes. That bike cost like 5x the amount I paid for my (used) road and gravel bikes combined, so I haven't bothered registering their numbers.

For a few years my city required bicycle registration. Wasn't very expensive. I worked in a high traffic tourist area where all the cops hang out so I registered everything. Soon they did away with the registration law anyway but my new situation is doubtful I would bother to register.

I have registered mine with Project 529, I didn't know about Bike Index, I'll have to check that one out; I also have my numbers all written down and filed at the house, two of my bikes are registered with Markel Insurance. Where I live the police, nor the sheriff departments will not register our bikes where I live.

giemsa 11-22-22 04:59 PM

Yep, I've registered mine under the paranoid fever dream that someone might claim my bike is actually theirs. Over the years I've known a couple dozen people who've had their expensive bikes stolen, and despite having the serial number zero have gotten them back. The times that it's actually useful for recovery are probably the rare exception rather than the rule

My state has a mandatory registration law, mainly enforced at the retail purchase point (retailer is liable to HIDoTax for registration fee). In theory unregistered bikes are subject to police confiscation. The bigger practical problem is selling a bike second hand without doing a transfer -- buyer is at his own risk.

Our city use to require registration but that got overturned when it was determined that ZERO bikes were recovered based on the registration over a several year period and they were just treating it like a tax and slush fund. Now in a partnership with a local bike charity all recovered bikes are ran through the 529 garage app.

I register all my bikes with both bikeindex.org and project 529. I used to register with the local police as well, but they stopped collecting that data and use project 529 instead these days. It may not be a massive safeguard but it can’t hurt to have that information stored remotely.

I get BOLO notices from Bike Index on Twitter like this:

"serial# not good enough to reclaim a stolen bike"/maybe the gov where you live is corrupt? works to reclaim in s.e. Mich.$1. to register at city hall.

Growing up in the 70s we were not allowed to park our bikes at school if it was`nt registered. Kinda dumb.

blue192 01-27-23 12:34 AM

I registered my bikes through the local police station. I do live in Canada and is a requirement for my homeowners insurance policy otherwise would only get 300$ if stolen. If my bike is ever stolen however, I highly doubt I would see it again even though it is registered.

Arthur Peabody 01-27-23 10:54 PM

Albuquerque required registration but never set up the process, so let it lapse. A motorist ran into me throwing me 10 feet into the air. Passersby got the license number. It was 2 blocks from the police station. The officer never filed a report. No one's going to do anything about a stolen bicycle. Mine's crummy and covered with splotches of spray paint from cleaning out the nozzle when I paint my appliances or pickup or other stuff.

BTDT But having moved to another state, back in 2019. I wonder if I need to register my bike again?
