Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if it's up by the weekend. It might be a few weeks.

Honestly? This is not a "someone", though I imagine their CTO's career is finished. However, you don't get to this level of shutdown because of one person's actions, not even at the CTO level. This is the kind of thing that requires systemic failures on multiple levels to achieve. You know where I work; we take a great deal of measures to prevent anything like this. And believe me, it's not as if no one has tried.

That's pretty bad. Can the files be synced locally and then uploaded to Strava?

"A couple weeks" is the darkest-timeline version where they have to stand up new servers and get it running from their last known-safe backup. However, it's possible. Days would be if it can be undone. And this all assumed it really is ransomware and that that's not rumor and they don't just have to fix a broken deployment. However, this being 2020, I'm not willing to be hopeful. Hell I haven't opened the Bloodroot knife because I'm afraid there'll be something wrong with it; the box is sitting by the door.

Bah Humbug 07-23-20 06:15 PM

Oh and yes, the files can be manually uploaded. I'll do that on promising weeks.

You know better, but is it possible “someone” clicked on a link and downloaded a virus or Trojan horse etc. that allowed outside access??

I used to have that malady. I eventually traced it to Arabica coffee. Robusta coffee doesn't cause it. Food for thought.

Speaking of coffee, mrs datlas has started making cold brew. It’s quite a smooth taste.

That's usually how ransomware hits individuals and small companies, and may be what happened here. However, with sensible security design, that doesn't matter - I could hand my work laptop to anyone on this board, I would bet, and they wouldn't be able to steal any actual financial data. They certainly wouldn't be able to torch our servers. It makes it a frustrating place to work (lots of red tape), but everything is segregated and scrubbed and encrypted. If I got disgruntled there is relatively little I could do. The machines that could be used for such are heavily secured and no one can just load their Outlook on it and click a link promising a weight loss cure. Garmin is big enough to know better, and damn sure is big enough to take such precautions.

For reference, I couldn't even easily steal the data on the test server, and that's invalid test data that wouldn't work out in the real world. It's still encrypted all the way through and I'm literally locked from exporting it in any way. Any machine able to connect to production servers is even more secure.

It's actually too smooth for my preference.

I gave that some thought during my brief dance with brewed coffee a couple weeks ago.
Their eyes met across a crowded room......

Same. I'll drink it. But, if I want coffee, I want hot coffee.

I meant their CTO or next level down. But agree with everything you said.

I’ve always had it, ENT could fix but I’m not interested in surgery

I had it once. During an overnight group bike trip. I would have brought my own stove and coffee had I known they would be serving cold brew, especially since it was chilly when we woke up.

indyfabz 07-24-20 05:35 AM

Lost power last night before bedtime. Came back on after an hour. Was hanging on the deck with the cat. Went inside to find it out again. Crashed on the couch because it was too hot upstairs. Woke up at 3 to the sound of central air. Yadda yadda yadda I’m really tired this morning.

Yesterday, my wife tells me one of my wheels has a wobble. I take a quick look and it's not bad so I finish the rid. Get home and look at it and it's a broken spoke... oops... broken aluminum nipple.

OK, no problem, I'll make an espresso and redo the wheel. Espresso machine fails to pump water. I call the dealer and lady says that according to their records, I've had the unit for two months now so how many times have I descaled it? Times? Uh, that would be zero. We have soft water so I didn't bother. She runs me through some diagnostics and says, yup, your three way solenoid valve is plugged. I'll send you to a couple links on how to tear your machine down. I look at the videos and it's like brain surgery to get to this goofy thing. Back to the Nespresso and Aeropress until I get up the nerve to tear this thing apart.

Yup - besides me, no one touches them in my house, either. I tend to binge, though - a jar of pickles or peppers will either sit, mostly full, in the fridge for two years before I throw it out... or it'll be gone in under two weeks. :foo:

There's a fierce competition for pickles in our household. A jar is usually gone within 2-3 days.

We still have some Thai peppers dried out from last year's balcony garden, I've never thought about throwing some into a jar, might have to try that :thumb:

Dude, that sucks. I would hate to be the person that recommended that machine to you.

I've lived in municipalities with pretty good water and I've only descaled my machine twice in... goodness... 12 years?

So you can hear the pump going but it's not coming out (back-flushing or something)?

MoAlpha 07-24-20 06:25 AM

PM delivery delayed until Monday. It seems to have gone from Vancouver to Louisville to Billings so far. Oh well. Got new club """kit""" on Weds and better to space out the indulgences a little.

datlas 07-24-20 06:32 AM

Every time I hear about "kit" I think of this:
