How high was the cadence? Over 115 and I start to rock and bounce a bit

It wasn’t any higher than normal.

However, I am a bit scared that those of us who still run tubes in our road tires and use caliper brakes and cable shifters are gong to pushed into C&V in the near-future.

Or even worse, "Early Brifter Bikes."

My ex riding buddy was here for the month of December. He had the brifters from which the cable exits at a right angle. He was complaining of squishy shifting in the rear. I told him what I had heard about the fraying cables. This man knows NOTHING about mechanics of any stripe. He's a free-lance translator. Anyway, I suggested he take it to a shop. Then he went back to Spain. He will return to find the problem worsened, unless his son takes care of it.

I am fed up with the crap battery life on my Garmin 130. I do want something that will be reliable and integrate well with my Varia, but not too pricey.

I am leaning towards an Edge 530 or maybe a gently used 520. Comments??

I know when I am riding out of my class I have felt that way, not like something is wrong but more like something isn't right. I think it's just how our physicality *****es about being asked to do something that hard for an extended length of time. As far as feeling sick, you are doing it correct. I get that quite often under hard efforts. I have actually thrown up twice that I can recall on the bike because of it. I had just eaten and the ride leader decided it was breakaway time. I felt better afterwards, but never caught back up.

That's not what they mean by "leaving it all on the road".

Are you locked in to Garmin? I’ve been very happy with my Wahoo Bolt, but I don’t have experience with others.

1030 Plus

I can now hear the tone from the Varia. I also have the 530, but the chime is too soft to overcome the wind through my ears.

Plus, I can now read the damn thing without glasses.

It's a bunch of money, but it is a life-safety issue.

I decided to post about the Litespeed there. You know, throw them a bone. A pity post, if you will.

Will consider the Bolt, it's apparently comparable to the Garmin. I am not locked in, as long as the device does its job with routing turn-by-turn routes and plays nice with my Varia radar which the Bolt does.

Maybe, but I am thrifty and really don't need the size/features of the 830 or 1030.

Honestly, if the 130 had a decent battery I would just stick with that.

The 530 has been awesome. Great battery life, nice screen and maps.

A riding buddy has a 520 - when connected to my Varia, every alert kicked on the screen backlight and it significantly shortened the battery life of his 520 to the point that he gave up and disconnected. I'm not sure if that's been addressed via firmware, yet.

Good intel. I would consider a 520 but if the Varia drains it, I might avoid.

Having used both with the Varia, I'd go Garmin. Maps/nav is better on the Garmin and, while the Bolt does fine with the ANT+ Radar, it doesn't do ANT+ Lights (at least it didn't a year and a half ago), which is a nice little thing to have.

I haven't really used the nav features, so I can't tell you much about that. I have zero complaints about anything else. Setting up Varia with the Bolt was easy-peasy.

Mojo31 01-27-22 10:14 AM

I will concur that the 530 is a really good unit. My only complaint was the ability to hear the tone.

What little activity there is could have stayed in the C&V subforum, no? Or just the Road sub. I guess this was discussed before they started that sub.

Hmmm...I never even considered having my Bolt control lights. I didn't even know that was thing. I'm also not so sure I need/want it.
