A couple of months ago, my new cardiologist put me on beta blockers. On my first ride of only 10 miles my heart rate was 70 or under. I quit using them and went back to my old meds. Two days ago I saw him and he was angry because I didn't follow his directions. I explained my hobby and what I wanted to do, but it was just blah, blah, blah to him. I told him I would try them again. So today, after being on them for a day, my 33 mile ride was probably my worst ever. Started out OK, felt good, then just lost ALL energy in a headwind on the way home. The internet says I should get used to them somewhat. I'm hoping so.

Beta blockers are going to reduce your HRmax and thus your performance on the bike. Best advice is to discuss risks/benefits with a physician who can help you find a good solution. Sometimes this involves a lower (or lowest) dose but really depends on the details.

My cardiologist was a cyclist in his youth. He hasn't put me on any meds; just told me I'm not 20 anymore and to act my age. I hope it works out for you.

I mentioned the AC seatpost because that's the one several people have had trouble with,, including myself. On those things, it's the adjusting bolt that breaks leaving the saddle dangling unrideable. Mine broke on the top of a small mountain pass while on a solo ride. I found a ball bearing and forced it into the post to hold the saddle on enough to descend into town to find a bolt.

I have both, plus a lot of others. I like the Thomson for the adjustability and the solidity, but the way they make a setback post is just ugly. The AC on the Battaglin has gone at least 8000 miles without breaking. It did become loose once, so now I remember to check it.

EDIT: Because I have short femurs for the length of my legs, I tend to run my saddles pretty far forward, so zero setback posts work well for me in many cases.

I wanted to give all my bikes more saddle time, so I started choosing one bike a week to ride for all my midweek rides, while still reserving the Litespeed or the Canyon for long Sunday rides. A couple weeks ago, it was the Schwinn Circuit's turn. That's the 22" (~55-56cm) one that's too small, but which I fitted with a 130mm stem and long seatpost to make it fit, but that leaves the bar 2cm lower than any other bike in my stable. And a couple hard rides, with lots of time in the drops left me with lower back spasms, so I decided I needed one that fit. So I bought a 23" frame with no fork, but with a Sante BB, AND a 24" frame with fork and most of a Sante headset but no BB. I found a local builder who can cut and re-thread the fork to fit the 23", so last night I took the 22" bike down.

Here are the 3 frames, side by side, from the smallest to the largest. The largest is a 1988 Circuit, which was a different color (bright red vs candyapple red), but otherwise the same. The forks are in the front.

And here's a pic of The Mighty Schwinn, as I named the 22" Circuit. Requiescat in pace. When I build up the 23"frame into a bike, it'll have to earn a new name.

Just went to pick up my new bontrager shoes and they don’t fit. I am a size 42, I checked my foot measurement while I was there, but these shoes are significantly more narrow than the XXX and I don’t know why. I would have thought they would keep the shoe fit the same for all of their shoes. Anyways, order a 42.5 to try, but I’m not convinced. The toe box area was super tight.

My friend who works for that startup company that makes a computer which sounds like a jumping marsupial now works for a bigger company that sounds like spam since the big company bought the startup. He has to go to South Dakota tomorrow to do some work with a power meter company which has the same name as Deep Space 9’s most famous Ferengi….anyway I did ask him, while he is there, to peek into the dumpsters and if he sees a PM size 175, to snag it for me.

With my luck he will only find a half-filled bottle of vodka.

Hopefully it’s one of the better ones like Belvedere.

I am thinking the best I could hope for is Mr Belvedere.

I was speaking with a clubmate today on today's ride. She had been having all types of "problems" with her drivetrain, not shifting right, skipping etc.
She took it to the LBS. Turns out she had not changed her chain in over 3.5 years!! And this person rides about 5K miles/year. She was complaining that they had to not only change the chain but the cassette and chainrings and RD pulleys. I told her chains are cheap, and to use a ruler to measure and change them when they get beyond say 0.75% and/or at LEAST yearly.

She said only "a few" of her cogs/chainring teeth were really shark-finned. I advised that any is too many. I hope she gets it now.

Ugh. :(
