That Eaton Commander is desireable. Many Raleigh like attributes. Unusal lugs, real nice pin stripping, outstanding condition I wish I could reach Toronto shipping costs, too few nickels in my budget. I do need to break out of the 60's and find 50's machines.

I could use a little help again. So, I've taken the hub apart and laid it out before me. I think I'm missing a couple pieces. As I look at the exploded view and my layout I am missing 2 part # K521 axle washers which are squared in the center and tabed but I do have 2 locking washers that have round centers. I have an extra 1/8 thick washer. Part "X49-2 fitted" sprocket spacing washer 1/16 thick, I have not separated the sprocket dust cap from the sprocket is that where the spacing washers are? and finally part K463 Circlip I don't have one?

This exploded view is of the later splined driver type hub. Wish I knew more about your old style threaded driver hub, but for sure, yours doesn't have the circlip. That holds the cog on a splined driver. Don't know about the spacers. Here's some anti rotation washers (k521). You will need those.

You do need these. If you're planning on using the hub with vertical dropouts, you'll need the modern version with only one tab:

And yes, the spacers and circlip mount on the driver to hold the cog in place. Pop the circlip off with a screwdriver, and the cog and spacers will just slide off the driver. Unless you have one of the pre-1952 AW hubs with the threaded driver, in which case you need to secure the driver in a vise and use a chain whip to get the cog off the driver.

Good buy! Another tall frame too. Really, really nice. I think this one is the deluxe model because it has the westrick rims and single bolt brake levers. Here it is in the 1970 catalog with it's Brooks saddle, frame pump and saddlebag.

I did it again. At least it was cheap, but the last thing I needed was another shifter. This one was a wreck. Bent case, missing it's bolt, clogged up with dirt and dried up grease. Only light rust though. I seem to have a problem passing up basket cases. I soaked the parts overnight in Evapo-Rust, squared up the case, patched up the case finish with Brownell's Action Magic. BTW, this stuff works great for replacing that dull gray finish Sturmey Archer used on some parts like shifter cases and guide wheels. It's a dry lube that burnishes into the steel. I ironed out the faceplate as best as I could. There wasn't much left of the black in the embossed areas of the face plate so I replaced it and gave it a new spring. So it was junk and now it's a bit dinged up but respectable and works great. I hope it finds it's way to an old bike someday.

JohnD. yes it is pre 52, It's off a 49 and has no date on the hub. I emailed a guy in England (forget the name right now) but he's an expert on hubs and couldn't explain this anomaly. It's old. Also the serial number on my "52" is another anomaly #69722 so go figure. Hopefully I'll find those anti-rotation washer on my other hub axle or buy them.
also, I really like the Sprite tires with the two pinstripe whitewalls but I can't find them on line.

That's a very excellent example of a cherished 1960's rider. I definitely feel the attraction of earlier times also, but don't feel like yours is somehow lacking.

Anyone who can post a picture from their yard or ride with palm trees and a hibiscus needs to be treated with proper degrees of envy - especially during the colder months here.

I should note that there was not a single Raleigh engineer who contemplated balmy breezes during winter months, so by rights, you should consider surrendering this steed to someone in the intended geography. :innocent:

That looks to have original white twin stripe Raleigh tires. I think this was the first year Raleigh transitioned to pinch ended brake cables stops. Nice work grabbing that beauty for essentially $ nothing. I wish more like that would come my way. Tremendous shape!

I could go along with that possibility. It is looking exactly a how Dunelt would be out fitted. I'm also curious about the Eaton Commander origins.

Just so your not delayed on the road to hell buy a few things from them. lets us know the quality.

I see they sell 28" roadster fenders and they don't have the side tab stay mounts like the Asian fenders usually have. Looks like they would use the Birmingham style stays with a plate on the back. The looped Raleigh stays wouldn't work.

Classic elegance.

It's definitely a pre-Raleigh/1960 machine. Everything on it is Birmingham made. The graphics suggest it's a late 50's. It's a nice bike for the money.
@johnnyspaghetti, The Eaton's Company (and Simpsons, Sears etc) sourced bikes from many manufacturers, including Hercules and Raleigh. The Commander has proved to be a Herc model. Canada had more intimate relationships with British bike makers which provided a lot of variety of nice Brit bikes in the market place.
