I assume you are talking about the Giro shoe.

Maybe the design is to get around patents that other shoe companies use. I agree it is complicated and also ugly with the two dangling straps.

I think it's a stupid design. There's little velcro to secure the laces, so if you have narrow feet, can you trim the laces down to make sure that enough of the velcro still engages? At least with most velcro straps you can trim the overhang and still have a decent amount of interface. How do you swap out the lace/strap if you damage the lace?

My guess is that it's one of those, "We gotta make something 'new' every year so let's throw something together." type of things.

Cycling shoes are a mature system. They've been around for a long time. There is only so much you can do to improve them.

On the other hand, if you offer the same shoes for several years and the other guy is offering the "X-9000 shoes with Xylophan Carbon Nanomachine Technology", then you know a significant number of people will buy from the other guy. The cycling economy is based on that.

Proof: Put the average local/regional crit racer on some above average equipment from 15 years ago (like 105) and their performance will not decline.

Beat most of the recent hour record holders except Wiggins. But Zirbel's attempt was at 1,888 metres elevation.

They talk about everything but what the pressure ratings are. That's kind of an important spec.

The construction doesn't suggest they should be much different than current tires. And clinchers won't go above about 130psi because the rim design can't handle it.

I'm more interested in independent substantiation of the rolling resistance and durability. But I'm happy to see that they're continuing to invest in updating track tires.

Some clincher rims are designed for higher pressures. I ran my clincher set-up for the past three years at 140-145psi: Deep V rims and Vredestein Fortezza SL tires.

3) No surprise tire makers would see a competitive advantage to advertising higher pressures - they're not on the hook if the rim fails. What matters is the lesser of the tire and rim.

4) But most importantly, I worry that not everyone will treat something they read here about tire pressure as specific to a certain track wheel setup. A number of Mavic and Zipp clinchers (including the comete road, super-9, 404, 808...) are rated for 110-125 psi. There is an aviation saying about operating an aircraft outside of its limitations: you may get away with it, but you should understand that you're now an unpaid test pilot.

If you're just trying to construct a specific exception to what I wrote, go ahead and have at it. But if by posting a bunch of tire specs and relating a conversation you mean for people to generalize that it's okay to just blindly pump clinchers up to the tire's max pressure, it's bad advice.

We use the Vittoria Diamante Pro Pista Clincher tyre on our training wheels and pump them up to approx. 10 bar which is 145psi which I thought was the max psi that is printed on it, I'll check tonight.
