It was hotter than it had been for a while, I went through two three bottles of Gatorade which near the end were like hot tea, and replenished with cool mountain water in Sutton for the final 15 km. There was also a couple of km of trail.

Hate those. The last one I encountered took me up a one mile climb between 12-15% 😲 and it was hot. 🚴‍♀️. Had to stop at the top just to get the sweat out of my eyes since my head band failed.

idk if i've just started paying more attention to road/ped construction, but I swear, 5+ years ago I don't recall this much of it. It'd probably be less of a problem IF the areas under construction weren't dragged on for many months/years or if the end product was actually done well...

It's getting hard finding a local area to ride (20+ miles) in without seeing those orange cones!

You are so right. The place I ran into construction has gone on for more than a year. I hit it last summer and had to detour, then earlier this summer it appeared finished and was free and clear. A month later, closed again. Go figure? :wtf:

Spot on for my area too.
The 45mph+ roads that are closed or have reduced lanes is bringing a lot more traffic to the areas with 35mph (& less) , however, those drivers also brought the higher speeds & careless habits with them too. A 30 mph single lane route that I used to like is lucky to have a car do within 5mph of that posted sign... I'd wager to say the average speeder is doing 45mph. Also, that road was relatively smooth a year ago. Now it's pothole infested, debris scattered about, & has had a watermain break resulting in a poor pavement patch job in place of the smooth concrete it once had.

I had never heard of those raids. Looking it up, they were even active on this side of the Continent.

"The Fenian Brotherhood organized openly in the Pacific Northwest states during the 1870s and 1880s, agitating to invade British Columbia. Although no raids were ever launched, tensions were sufficient that Britain sent several large warships to the new railhead at Vancouver, British Columbia for the celebrations opening the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1886."

another (mostly) coastal c-note. oh sunday beach traffic!

16.7 and the usual about 800 feet. Attraction along the way but ignored - the very enticing aroma of the Ballard Seafood Fest's bbs salmon meal but I knew the crowds would make it unpleasant. Then a slight detour adding about a mile to hit the local bike shop to pick up new SPD multi-release cleats for a pair of new bike shoes. A gray, overcast day with temp just at 70 but Golden Gardens was a zoo.

Caveat: I compete in the 65 to 70 bracket. If we were talking all men, I would be off the map. The wana be Phil Gaimon of the senior set.

30.5 miles in just about 1:45.

zaroba 07-20-22 07:37 AM

Only around 2 miles this morning before it started getting hot outside. But it was my first ride in 10 years besides a simple trip around the block 2 days ago. My knees have to get used to it again.

It's amazing how much more of a workout biking is than walking, knees tired after less than a quarter mile, yet no trouble going for a 5 hour walk on a beach.

Troul 07-20-22 08:07 AM

70 miles. 19 MPH headwind going out. Didnt mind it, it was dry warm, & very little vehicle traffic. I'd kept on going if I had the time.

Juanita Way? Time to wrap that one up.

You have to start somewhere and sometime. Keep at it.

There will be no riding as someone has to recover from exhausting Lake 22.

Average Old Guy 07-20-22 01:33 PM

8 miles

91 deg F; heat index 102, sweated like a sinner at a tent revival in Mississippi in August. But it felt GOOD.

I'm 77, had a string of medical problems, could not work out for 3 months, then, wife fell, broke L1 and pelvis, I was her caregiver for 4 months. Started back to working out 6 weeks ago, I was in awful shape. I'm up from 8 pushups 6 weeks ago to 25 pushups today ; curling 30 pounds in each arm; bike distance is up from 2 miles to the 8 miles I did today.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Actually West Lake Sammamish Drive. I used to commute from Lake City to Kirkland over Juanita Way 20 years ago. I would hate to detour around that.

I got in 43 miles today. It was very warm for the Seattle area at around 85F but that's ok because I like it.

rsbob 07-20-22 10:55 PM

A quick flat 30. Had a nice coffee at the finish with a nice cyclist from Seattle at Aroma Coffee in Fall City. It was splendid.

Troul 07-21-22 04:09 AM

sticky 50 miles. For a Thursday, there was more runners & riders out than usual. Must be giving away free flats or something.

kahn 07-21-22 11:59 AM

Home by 10am to beat the heat. 15.6 and the usual 700-800 feet.

Shilshole Marina. I never really noticed that long breakwater until this morning. Must have been the relatively early morning light. There was also a bit of fog over Alki in West Seattle.

You need to hike more. That way every other part of your body will be sore! :p

I was a serious hiker until I used too long a screw to secure a new cleat, which I couldn’t feel poking the bottom of my foot due to some neuropathy. The screw created a painful neuroma which I can tolerate cycling until this winter when I will have it either removed or burned or whatever. So unfortunately hiking really makes it hurt. I will be ok in a couple of days since it is more of an abrasion type rather than the cyst type. More info than you wanted to know, BUT I DO LOVE HIKING!
