A train requires 1614 feet to stop from 30 mph. I'm not sure the size of the train is that important, since all the cars also have brakes.

Not in a Stephen King story.

A 100 car train takes about a mile to mile and a half to stop at 55 mph. Much depends on the weight of the loaded cars or empties, the track grade, and weather variables.

The belief that a train can stop like a car has no doubt killed a significant number of people.

It's a movie made by movie makers.

Those types of things don't always reflect reality.

If enough movies show X, reality becomes largely irrelevant. Movie watchers expect to see X.

Nope.

Tell Rob Reiner. I'm sure that one flaw caused the whole movie to be a failure at the box office and certainly kept it from becoming one of the best-remembered movies of its era.

Velo Vol 09-29-21 12:18 PM

Dear Rob Reiner,

If you're reading this thread, I want you to know you should have had sparks coming from the train wheels on the bridge scene.

Sincerely,

Velo Vol

genejockey 09-29-21 12:25 PM

Alternatively, Reiner may have made the conscious decision NOT to show something as cliched as sparks coming off the wheels - "EVERYONE does that! It's such a cliche!"

I mentioned my wheelbuilding idea to Mrs. GeneJockey and she seemed supportive.

Or resigned. Hard to tell sometimes.

Mojo31 09-29-21 12:28 PM

It would have been better if it was a Tarantino movie. Limbs would have been severed in that scene.

When my wife and I were dating, I played a lot of golf. My bride to be wasn't so sure about that and thought I should play less. Her mom advised her that one day she would be glad that I spent so much time at the golf course.

Maybe your wife has just reached the point where she is happy for you to be entertaining yourself in the garage?

And a whole lot more swearing.

The key to longterm success in marriage may just be the ability to get away from each other enough.

Back from Costco. Didn't get anything. I forgot my list.

UP, BN, CSXT, CN or other? And, which heading?

List? We don’t need no stinkin’ list.

No list is part of the adventure. Also, another fun time is counting masks and guessing who is vaccinated and who isn’t.

seedsbelize2 09-29-21 01:26 PM

100% masked in Mérida Costco.
On subject, I have found it impossible to unsubscribe from Costco emails. I tried several times. This time I reported it as spam. Vamos a ver.

I think it's true. I have been involved in cognitive enhancement for years and used to show a slide at the end of my talks showing how the effect sizes in our fancy-pants, high-tech, brain stimulation world were not much better than from gum chewing or smoking a cig. Our stuff has gotten better lately though.

You have no way of knowing if the guesses are correct.

seedsbelize2 09-29-21 01:28 PM

I hadn't ridden the Trek 414 in months and months. A lovely rider. I very much enjoy the narrow handlebars. I wish I had them on all my bikes.

That's why they're called guesses.

What's the point if the answer is unknown?

Junior versus Senior in hoops.

I had a case a while back where two kids were pushing their bikes on railroad tracks. They found themselves on a bridge crossing an interstate highway and a train coming. One kid got off. The other got his pedal stuck in the track and wouldn't leave it. The train hit the bike causing the kid to get knocked off the bridge. Fell onto the highway and died. The engineer and crew hit the emergency brake as soon as they saw the kids over a mile away (there was some curve to the track leading to the bridge), but it did no good. I never saw a grown man cry like the engineer did when he was asked to recount what happened. Sad deal all the way around.

That's a terrible story.
