Well, since sailboats never race in a straight line, there is a lot involved such as:
  • which side of the course is favored due to wind speed, direction, wave action, the effects of shorelines on wind, the effects of current on speed over ground
  • what are your competitors doing - should you lead, follow, cover, take a flyer to try to gain on them when they are ahead
  • how can you get to the best spot on the starting line without fouling another boat
  • if offshore, what is the best route and how will that be impacted by weather
  • what sail choice will give you the best performance at any given moment
  • how to best utilize the rules to gain an advantage at mark roundings
Many other things as well.

Someone on the other boat yells, “Don’t ever do that again!” It became a standing joke for us and still gives me a chuckle.

Of course they beat us by like 20 boats, anyway.

That begs the question (;)), did your boat plane?

By the way, I passed through Philadelphia, TN, a few weeks ago. It's a much easier drive than the PA one.

Ever notice that the Trek bike he's riding has a triple up front?

Hahahah! You had to go there. Yes, off a wave face, under spinn, in a 28 kt gust at 120° TWA, for about 4 seconds.

Anticipate wind and other competitors, basically.

A little over 1000 miles short of my goal for the year.

Yes, those two are definitely frowned upon. Post at your own risk. The Polish team one . . . . I always have to wonder why someone would want to keep that on their computer.

I agree, but you'd be surprised at how often the staff sees things differently.

It was mildly entertaining 10 years ago - I don't know why it ever gained the traction that it did.

Yeah I had to go back and look, now that I've had my coffee and breakfast. Pffttt I've seen that before, as a rule I rather enjoy humorous stuff, even attempted humorous stuff.

The big difference is that in bike, running, cars, and virtually all other races, the competitors are following the same path. In sailboat racing, there is no path. On a lake, for example, two boats heading toward the same turning mark can be a quarter mile or more apart and sailing in completely different wind and water conditions.

"smart" is a broad term. I wasn't sure what you meant in this context.

Actually you have less to worry about since you don't live in the Northeast or quasi-north. ;)

If I were swimming in extra cash, I could see getting one of those electric crate motors, to put it into a late 50s-60s land yacht. Something huge and weird looking, like an Imperial or pre-61 Lincoln. It's hard to justify driving something that gets single- digit miles per gallon as the planet warms and the seas rise.

Then again, if you equip them with a powerful electric motor, you still have crappy drum brakes, so you should upgrade those, too.

I would consider an electric conversion for the Saturn, but it works great and gets 40MPG so not necessary.

I got some big s#%t from my wife about that when she noticed the average mpg readout on my Audi RS5 was showing "5" (following a couple of fun days). That car only lasted about a year.

Strong Southerly winds mean that leaf raking activities are not required on the rjones28 estate.

Bird post time, a Peregrine sunning herself, waiting for a tasty morsel to make a mistake and fly by.

I feel like I'm starting to come around on the trainer. Rode two of the London maps (going after bonus experience points by covering routes that I haven't ridden) and had decent efforts (right around my outdoor FTP) in both the 10 and 20 minute range (Box Hill and TTing the Greater London Flat route, respectively).

Oh, and this was the first time firing up the fake TT bike. They fly. I should get one IRL :p

A great deal of experience says a slice of plastic water bottle works much better. More grab.

I really feel like I should get a halfway decent fat bike first... and then maybe a fun casual, plain-clothes bike... and then maybe a TT bike.

I really just need all the bikes. All of 'em. :o

Now's the time to register for Zwiftpower and get yourself set up so that you can see just how well you compare if you ever decide to do one of the events on Zwift. Like a race or the Tour of Zwift. ;) Or even just a casual group ride (cough-cough)
