There's a similar thread in Classic & Vintage and I might post these finds in that forum also, but these are tandem specific. I could not find such a thread in this forum so here goes. These turned up on the Richmond VA CL today. Not mine.

Thanks for these posts, guys. It's fun to see what's out there.
That's a nice deal on the Rumba. We have a Rock N Roll of maybe the same year and it's a nice ride (albeit heavy!)

There are a few dozen tandems for sale around the Sacramento area right now. The Craigslist pickings seem rich right now in general. In the tandem category there are a bunch of 1990's-ish steel Burleys and Santanas in the $500-1000 range where I am shopping, along with a smattering of more and less expensive stuff. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for maintainable and upgradeable Shimano indexing and 26" or 700c not 27" wheels, which puts me 1990 or later, and I want a bike in good nick since I'd rather go ride than spend my wife's patience on tinkering. I've fallen victim to the hard sell about tubing and fork strength and wheel quality at the Santana website and so I'm looking at them specifically. There seems to be no real consensus on pricing them, as seemingly equivalent things get priced at $800 and $1600. Here are a few examples.

Burley Duet Tandem Bicycle old but nice components and accessories and a sad story $400
bicylces (tandem, recumbent) & accessories Co-Motion with couplers $1500
Burley 16 Spd Tandem Bicycle This won't go away at $250. Too far away and wife thinks it's too weird.

Low price, but hinky looking listing. I'm too often and recently bitten by the people who send a text to ask for an unfiltered email...

So do you have 205 miles to ride back home now?

Darth Lefty 05-08-15 10:32 PM

No... no tandem soon I think. And when I do it will have to be 700c and Shimano, no messing about with antiques. A man can obsess, though.

Here's my CL search string.

A month of cruising the tandems on my local CL has helped me a lot to understand the new and used markets both.
  • A lot of the nice tandems for sale are older. I want to look out for one that is 8 speed or better. This will also give me indexing.
  • Many mass market MTB style tandems have decent frames but dreadful cheap components. Grip shifters! Ugh. Might be one reason drop bar conversions are popular
  • We'd be a heavy team. I'd want one with a drum brake.
  • Many show up with a Yakima rack included or for sale along side. Definitely want this. Can ask for it if it's not mentioned.
  • Although there are several sizes, they tend to have similar and kind of short top tube lengths for the captain. Fit is therefore going to be very adaptible but depend more on components (stem, bar, seatpost, saddle) than on the frame.
  • Most decent things on CL are $1000+-500. More than that is probably something special, less is probably dreadful. But might also be ignorant seller.
  • I have not yet figured out why, but it seems like most of the Santana and Burley tandems for sale are of the late-80's or early-90's vintage. Was there a tandem boom? Were they outcompeted by Trek and Cannondale in the 90's-00's?

I really think that if you are going to switch to V brakes then you ought to have this canti hanger hold something else. I don't know what, though.

The only other mention I can find of a Calvert is by @zonatandem a few years ago, posting about tandems seen at a swap meet. He said it was from WA. Some fillets and some lugs. This one is sort of pink or faded burgundy, and crusty but expensive looking components. $200!

That bike has some potential! The frame looks nice, anyway. I'm wondering what the heck that chainring is doing in the middle of the timing chain, and he has the cantilevers connected with a crazy long yoke cable. But at $200, you've got plenty of room to fix it up to something you like, even adding brifters, etc. My 1979 Santana has worked well for us so far, on quite a few rides up to 60 miles.

Bike Friday triple tandem

Coupled triples are pretty rare on CL, and this is a price similar to what I've seen for late model 2-seaters.

The he floating chainring provides tension.
