Hi,

Thinking of getting my first hybrid bike. Can't decide between Carrera crossfire 3 or Voodoo marasa. Help please?

The Voodoo Marasa because the Carrera Crossfire 3 has a cheap suspension fork. In my opinion, a rigid fork is a better option for a hybrid, especially when compared to a cheaper suspension fork.

Thank you for your response. I know to focus on one without suspension now. Would you recommend the Voodoo Marasa? I've also seen some Boardman bikes i.e. Hyb. Or would you recommend a Trek FX bike. Any other suggestions are welcome

Looking for my first hybrid bike in particular Trek dual sport 3 or Trek FX 3 disc. I read alot about hybrid bikes not needing cheap suspension but not sure if the dual sport 3 has 'cheap suspension'. Thank you for your recommendations.

Trek FX3 disc would be a great choice

I know you are excited to get a new bike. You really need to know however exactly why you prefer one bike to another BEFORE you purchase one. For instance, gearing may be different, and you need a certain ratio. A frame may have certain attachment points or features you prefer. One may not accommodate tires as wide as you prefer. One may not use your preferred drivetrain. It may come down to riding and one just somehow doesn't feel as good to you. For whatever reason, you need to know exactly why you prefer one bike over another.

It really is very new to me and trying to get the grasp with all the different considerations. This will be my first bike for a long time so just really looking for a decent all-rounder which will keep my interest up in biking. Looking to spend around the £500 mark so any recommendations would be appreciated. At the moment I've read good things about the voodoo marasa so leaning towards this bike but not sure if I should spend a little more and get a Trek FX disc 3... Considering this is my first bike do I need a Trek 3?

Thank you. I'm new to biking and will be using my bike for occasional pleasure use, looking to build my interest in biking. I've also read good things about a cheaper voodoo marasa bike. Considering this is my first bike would you recommend I buy the cheaper voodoo or invest a little more and get the trek FX 3?

Well, you really cannot compare the two. What is your budget? I looked up Voodoo Marasa. It's a very-very budget bike. A couple of heads lower in every respect than Trek FX 3.0.
Also, Voodoo later will be close to impossible to sell, if you ever decide to upgrade. 350 GBP is certainly a sizeable difference, but these are very different bikes.
I always found that it's better to stretch your budget, but get something you are really going to enjoy.

Well, it has everything to do with the terrain you are planning to ride on. Are you planning to ride mostly on pavement and light dirt trails, or are you planning to start riding it on the colour-coded bike park trails?
Dual sport has a cheap and heavy coil suspension, which will make your bike at least 3 lbs heavier, most likely 4, and will slow you down on the pavement.
FX 3 easily deals with light dirt paths and park alleys. Especially if you change tires to 35-38.
It's totally up to you, but I would personally never consider a bike with a coil fork. It's completely unnecessary for most recreational riding.

We really need to know what you plan on doing with the bike. Front suspension may just be overkill.

NO reason to get an H w one of those cheep forks.. heavy added, does so little in reality. Often the 'adjustable' ain't.

Tire clearance... enough to run at least 42mm/1.75" w ease. 2" better. Good rubber later makes said bike style much better rider.

Can I get your thoughts on Boardman HYB 8.8 vs Trek FX 3 disc?

These bikes are almost identical specs-wise. Trek has internal cables.
I don't think they are telling truth about the weight of Boardman. They say it's 10.4 kg.
if the price is the same, I would go with Trek. according to their official website MSRP is £850, which is the same as FX 3.

I get 9% off bikes from Halfords ... so this may sway me towards the Boardman.

best thing you can now do is try to take both on a test ride.
Are Treks easily available in the UK? That can also be another consideration. You might have to go with what you can actually get your hands on.
another bike, almost identical to FX 3, is Giant Escape 1. In Canada the MSRP is identical. We were choosing between the two. Escapes were not available in his size and we were lucky to be able to source him FX 3.

The two bikes are going to ride different, note the head tube angle and chainstay differences. (The FX2 and 8.9 appear to have the same geometry as the ones you are looking at)

You should try to test ride both and see them in person.

I have now come across gravel/adventure bikes. Looking at the Boardman ADV 8.9 and CXR 8.9. Not sure how these differ and if the hybrid (trek FX 3 or Hyb) is a better option?

Shopping locally? Someone w good service...chipping a few coins off is not job one.

Can I please also get your views on the sirrus X 4.0 which has a hardtail 'future shock' fork. Is this likely to have value as should I keep away as with other suspensions.
