New Old School Group Suggestions
 

Looking for a new group. But it’s going on a bike with rim brakes and 135mm spacing out back. Campy, Shimano and SRAM all have them. Right now I have Campy 10 speed on my bikes. But they are becoming pretty much obsolete. So I am more than willing to try a Shimano or SRAM group. This will be a do everything kind of bike. Weight weenies need not apply.

As much as i like my Campy stuff for a do everything bike that might see mods or evolution over time I say go with the bigger brands that offer more choices. Next up is what shifters you want/like. That aspect will filter down options real fast. I still like the fixed brake blade of Campy but dislike the double tap shift function of SRAM and the Micro Shift levers don't seem to agree with my hands. The front ring count is another filter. Here in the Finger lakes for old guys like me that's a triple. In NE OH there's not as much lumpiness, the three valleys are only a couple hundred feet tall at most, so a 2x with a huge rear cog set might be OK if the ratio gaps are acceptable. My needs are met with JTech Shiftmates, Campy Ergo and Shimano rest.

How is the Cleveland riding scene these days? When I had Bike One and rode with the CTC or the WRW it was pretty good as far as group rides went. Andy

Not too many rides these days. Strangely enough I was originally from Syracuse and Rochester then moved to the Cleveland area. Triples are my preferred group but there just aren’t many options available these days. I agree that SRAM double tap just feels weird. My brother loves Shimano. I have never tried a Microshift product. I would be open to if I could.

I like my IGH .. Rohloff was well designed from the beginning so not many new improved features to tout every year..

Shimano's Alfine 8 & 11 are good too..

I will +1 for Rohloff. You could make a pretty neat do it all bike with a Rohloff hub and you can get it in silver which is tough these days with components. It would be pretty neat and something you don't see as often but when you do hoooo baby it is nice!
